got a few messages from people saying if i want to keep my warantee intact not to sell my ps3 hdd.

as they say song doesnt accept warantee`s on ps3s with missing hdds ?

is that correct ?

they support under warantee you adding new hdds so why wouldnt they accept warantee on ps3s with upgraded hdds in them ? why does it have to be the original hdd ?

Im not sure, but if you send your PS3 in for repair with a bigger HDD you might not get your nice upgraded HDD back if they change your Console.

I don't know whether getting rid of it voids the warranty, however i'd keep the original anyway. The reason i'd do this is because when Sony 'repair' a PS3 under warranty, they actually swap it for another pre-refurbished PS3. If you keep the original HDD you can stick that back in your PS3 and keep your larger HDD to stick straight into your replacement PS3 (if you left it in the one Sony took away you'd never see it again).

Presumably, as they repair the old PS3 or use it for parts in fixing other PS3s, your 320GB drive etc won't be any good to them. I still have the 120GB drive my PS3 came with, and I expect to have to re-insert that, and remove my 320GB HDD, if/when I return it for a warranty repair.

yeah but when it comes time to send it in for repair i could send them the ps3 without a hdd in it

and all they would need to do is send me back a ps3 without a hdd in it.

and when did you ever have to send a sony playstation back to them ? i thought they do swap and replace on the spot as they did that with my ps2 about 5 times for me about 3 years ago.

they stoped doing all that ?

Don't have a PS3 myself , but I assume to remove the HD you need to disassemble the console , thus voiding the warranty.

I bet they'll think "Hmm, how did he remove the HD inside without opening the console"

:rolleyes::p:D

Of course it doesnt - the PS3 is built by the manufacturer to swap the HD easily without affecting the warranty.

actually, the hdd slots out of the console
and in the instruction manual it shows you how to change hdds for upgrade purposes :)

nope you don't need to dissasemble the ps3 to get to the hdd, there's a slot on the side for easy access

Edit: too slow

So you would expect them to know you havent package your PS3 for replacement as per its 'original' condition when sold? I assume thats somewhere stated when requesting a warranty return/repair...

Id be surprised if they didnt surcharge you if they didnt recieve it whilst theyve replaced the PS3 with one inside (dont think they send one without a HD - though Ive never needed to ask)...

id argue that you could and should send the PS3 back without the hard drive if its getting repaired

its the PS3 your claiming warranty on and not the hard drive that came with it.

if your hard drive was 100% what was broke then you wouldnt send off the whole ps3 would you ? just like if for example you bought a fitted kitchenand the washer broke you wouldnt send the whole kitchen back:p

not sure id tell them i sold it mind. would be more of a ''well i dont know where it is as it was surplus to requirements after i did the upgrade described in your manual''

Not really comparable though is it? The washer isn't an integral part of the kitchen required for the kitchen to function as a kitchen.

I'd imagine they'd want the original HDD for the reasons above - ie swapping for a refurbished machine will ensure you get back what you sent. This swap out scheme saves everyone time and likely sony money too.

Returning your ps3 without any hdd is likely a pita for sony as they would have to remove the fitted hdd to the refurnbished they were sending you. Extra time and money. However as they show you and allow upgrades then if you spoke to them and argued the toss I'm sure you'd be ok but may have to wat for a 'non standard' swap out which'll take longer...

Ahhh fair enough , if Sony allow upgrades then surely there shouldn't be a problem with selling it and just returning the console with no HD for warranty ?

the 60gig in my orginal PS3 borked the other day, good job it wasn't in the PS3 with all my data on it though!. Also i've only used it as a backup drive so it wasn't even used that much

id sell it and if your ps3 break, buy one for probs cheaper than you sold yours for. why do you have to swap your hd also? id assume sony would know people save a lot of stuff on their hard drives and its not something they are going to want to discard / backup when not needed to
