TV Licensing taking the old girl to court

I've had 2 visits from the idiots thus far and both times I told them that 1) by law am not required to inform them that I DON'T need a licence and 2) i just told them that i dont receive any broadcasted signals therefore no licence is needed.

I do watch tv from time to time but I won't be paying for tv licence. I have looked into this a bit extensively even if they take you to court the usual penalty you would have to pay is around £300 not £1000.

TV licensing are also breaking the DPA by not ensuring the personal information they hold is correct. Report them to the information commissioner.

thats a good point a very good point as one or two of the points of the data protection act stats accurate data, and they keep losing it and or not up to date

if i dont watch livetv, ie only on demand stuff via the net, i do listen to the radio inc bbc and i do use a tv set for games and dvds, do i need a license?

there are one or two programs i watch which id happily view after broadcast via on demand stuff if i could avoid a tv license.

You don't need a license in those instances. What I can't say is how it is defined, i.e. you must not have an areial in or on the house? etc.

If your watching any live broadcast via any mechanism even if its just 1 TV Show a month you DO need a license... there is no excuse...

You do NOT need a license to watch on demand (generally), listen to radio or if your using the TV to watch DVDs or play games...

its the generally bit that puts me off, cant see any definitive info on their site yet.
id happily take my ariel down to save a tenner a month for something i dont really like

There is nothing that says having an aerial on your roof means you need a TV licence. TV Licensing will still come after you regardless, having an address in the UK and no TV licence is enough for them to start sending out threatening letters. There is no cool technology or secret behind their campaign it's essentially spam everyone without a TV licence (and a lot who have one) with the letters and scaremongering via TV ads and billboards.

No you do not need to take your aerial down. simply unplung it and de tune the tuner.

As for no info on their site there is loads of it. As longas you do not watch/record/timeshift live broadcasts you do not need a license. for example watching Iplayer in most cases is fine as it is after the live broadcast. however if you watched F1 on the ITV website, that is same time as live broadcast so you need a license.

Go to court and produce your evidence so that it is plain that TV licensing is talking out of their A$$.

Then file a counter suit for loss of earnings and mental anguish caused by all of the ongoing stuff with them.

Should be good for a few grand

****Updated original post***

Mum filled out the paperwork and sent it back to the court, stated she would plead not guilty. Just waiting for the date now.

Icing on the cake is today she received another letter from them informing her that not having a license is an offence

Added upset is that because she works for the police she has had to inform them that she is being taken to court.

***Update 20th JAN***

Papers back from the court have a court date of 10th Feb.

Unfortunately the day after receiving the court date she received a one line letter from the TV Licensing people saying that they were dropping the case. :(

No show down people :(

She could ask her police collegues to investigate whoever it is that is directly responsible for all the letters on the grounds of harassment.
Won't go anywhere but the police will have an obligation to investigate the source of harrasement by a governmental agency.
