Hi all

When a TV stand is advertised as being recommended for a certain number of inches, how important it this? We need a new TV stand and the one we want says recommended for 37" TVs but supports up to 80Kg?!

The weight is about three times what's required, yet for some reason it only recommends up to 37". We have a 42" TV. Is this just a marketing thing to try and bluff people that can afford a bigger TV into paying more for an unnecessarily big stand, or is there a genuine reason for it?

Can anyone shed any light as to why this is?

Thanks.

personally id rather pay the extra for a tv stand than have it collapse and my tv ending up on the floor. even if it doesnt do it straight away, over time the weight could add strain onto weak points or parts where it can only manage said weight, hence the recomended weight so it doesnt come back to them that your tv has ended up on the floor.

Plasmas weigh more than the equivelent sized LCD. e.g. 42" plasma round about 28-30KG 42" LCD round about 18-20KG CRTs obvioulsy much more - I think my 24" CRT weighs about 50-60KG + easily

If your tv weighs less than 80kg you will be fine.

The reason it recommends a certain amount of inches is due to how wide the unit is.

If it recommends upto 37" and you put a 42" tv on it, you'll most likely have a couple of inches overhanging the sides. Not a huge deal, just make sure the stand isn't near an opening door/kids that could cause it to be nudged.

Ahhh...that's no problem as it's located in the corner and cannot be knocked.

Anyway thanks for the help all, sounds like I'll be fine.
