My Mugen!

Nice setup

I used to have 1/8th Buggys (Hence the start of my username) at one point I had about £1000 worth of kit. XB8 buggy new £500, Servos KO PROPO £100 each two of them, KO PROPO Helios £200 and engine over £100. This a yew years ago now I don't do the hobby any more.

Whilst we are on the subject...

A few months ago I finally bought my first RC car. Since I did my bit of research into the hobby I decided that my 'dream car' would be a factory team TC3, so I stuck in a cheeky bid on a newly assembled car, never ran car without radio gear and managed to win it at a bargain price (£90!).

With summer coming and my local track soon to be refurbished, I'm looking to get it running, but I need some suggestions on radio gear? I want some good entry level kit, but don't want to go over board.

Any other stuff a complete newbie needs to figure in? As far as I understand, I need a starter box (I've got a non pull motor), glow plug warmer, fuel (how much of a pain is this to get? My local R/C shop has closed :() and obviously the radio gear.

I would say grab a Spektrum DX3S for your radio, and grab some Bluebird high speed servos. Any high maH glowstarter will be fine, fuel - Bolton Model Mart, buy Optifuel in 25%. Buy a SMD Evo startbox.

I'd like to read more about these.

What is a good site to learn about them and what is an example of a good place to buy bits from?

Whats a typical cheap startup cost?

I had an XB8 for a while. It was a lovely car. It replaced a Kyosho 777 Kanai which was probably the best car I've ever had.

Cost does go too far. My XB8 and all the kit cost more than my Jeep Cherokee which was really bought to cart all the RC to the track. :)

Miss it loads but Sunday is the only day we have as a family so I had to stop :(

Find a track local to you.
Ask around what classes they run.
DON'T spend ££££££££ because talent isn't bought (I know :) )
Either buy new but cheap or 2nd hand from the bay so if you don't like it you won't lose too much.
Enjoy.

I bought all my first setup 2nd hand just in case I didn't keep it up. Did lots of 1/10 touring cars, 1/10 4WD and 1/8 Rallycross.

Oh memories, I used to race an electric TC3 with good results for a few years but packed it once I hit uni :) Very expensive hobby, at least for a student.

I have a lightning that i converted to brushless, made the chassis myself

Also my maxx, made this chassis too, had this for many years and probably around 1.5k in it. Converted to single speed center diff, its geared for just over 50mph flat out.

What talents have you got when you can afford to sink 1.5k into an RC car? I'm in the wrong place obviously :(

Anyway, I used to have a 1:10 Tamiya Mini I raced for a while but sold that many years ago. It's not something I could commit to again.

Good looking motor mate but you need to be posting vids of you jumping the local kids & landing on there faces to impress me.

the flashy show trucks I used to make and sell all over the world, but they were all shelf queens, I only have a few of those now. Most of the ones I have I actually drive now!

did a mini evo recently

Building Candy....

Have to ask. How do you do all that metal work ? tools etc ? I am interested in how you make those pieces if when you have chance you could tell us. I am sure a few of us would be very interested.

well a the chassis on the yellow and orange trucks I actually cut by hand, the whole thing, just hacksaw and files. I have a pillar drill too, I made the first gun with just these basic tools then more recently I bought a little micro mill and a lathe. The metal work on the lightning and emaxx was done using the mill and my last 3 guns could only have been done using a mill
