i was gobsmacked by this one. basically a work colleague has a 107, it had been reluctant to go into gear for the last few days so she asked me for my opinion.

with the engine off it went into gear ok, with the engine on and clutch depressed it required a fair bit more pressure to select any gear

basically the clutch was not disengaging fully

i went to teh internetz and did some searching and it seems thse car's clutches have a life span of 20-30k miles. there were people on these boards on 70k miles and their third clutch

its a "modern" new car, so im stunned it has such a major flaw. a clutch change seems to cost c.£500.

know of any other "modern" cars with big old flaws like that?

These things must either have a clutch plate the size of a pea or get driven by morons with no clutch control, personally i think its the latter, woman on my road has one, she needs to rev the things to death to get it moving backwards.

The clutch works out to around 2p per mile!

I would say a normal clutch would do 3 or 4 x the miles at 75000-100000. So cost is considerably less.

In 100000 miles it would work out to £500 for a regular car to £2000 for one of the aformentioned.

there are loads of people on those boards with similar instances though so they cant all be driver error

in fact, the warrently on the clutch was reduced to 15k miles becuase of the failure rate. its a cable actuated clutch, they even released updated adjustment figures too to get them to last longer

for reference, mk3 golf gti clutches last c.150k miles. my mk2 gearbox failed at 196k miles but it was on the original clutch!!

and people buy this crap because it's cheap to run

I've for a 56 Plate Aygo and never once had an issue with the clutch (or in fact any problems what so ever) and it gets used daily and quite a lot of in town traffic (so plenty of gear changes and start and stopping)

So yes, it is very cheap for me to run.... lowest insurance group, £35 a year tax (although £20 from this year) and £30 roughly a month on fuel.

are you the original owner from new? if so thats pretty good going, it seemed to be the norm according to the owners club sites that you should expect the clutch to die once youre close to 30k

Second owner, was used as a courtersy car for a dealership for a year before I got it but never had the clutch replaced.

Could be that im just lucky, but then these cars have sold in there shed loads so I'm sure there are plenty of other people with no issues too

My wife had a c1 for three years and put 60000 miles on it no problems at all with the clutch? Maybe she was lucky.

for the c1 google has 322,000 entries for searches relating to the c1 and its clutch

over 4 million searchs for 107 clutch problem

you must have dodged a bullet :P

Most useless way of 'proving' anything.

Google said:
Results 1 - 10 of about 631,000 for tony blair eats children.

I must have dodged a bullet too as I was never eaten by Tony Blair as a child

492,000 people had their cars stolen by black people and 779,000 black people can't swim

Surely this also means that it's been driven hard, I find it hard to believe a clutch lasts only 30k miles when some clutches such as the one on our old car lasted 280k miles (!, 440.000 ish km)? I mean it's understandable people rag their cars if they only have a small 1.1 l or so engine in it that barely pushes the car forward ? I can't see how a clutch can be made so weak that it breaks after only 30k miles, perhaps people drop the clutch at 6000 rpm all the time and drive in cities only ?

google never lies, there will be a wiki entry too but i just cant be bothered to search for it!!!!!

Ah Wikipedia, the website anybody can edit to say anything they want at anytime without any sort of citation. You should have mentioned these stone wall reliable sources in the first post and we wouldn't have taken the ****.
