Hey guys, not sure when this started, but it seemed to happen quite suddenly and it's getting worse. I've never seen a monitor do this before.

1. turn monitor on. THe blue light will come on but sometimes just flash. there is a hint of the backlight behond what looks like a black screen.

2. after several tries of turning it off and back on it does this:

you can jsut about make out a square in the top left that says 'digital' - showing the monitors input. the grey bar in the middles gradually spreads out to make the whoel screen grey:

3. once it;s fully grey, I find that leaving it for a few moments gives me the best chance of it working when I turn it off and on again.

4. if it has worked, the desktop appears but flickers very very fast, faster and faster until it stops and remains static. once it's up and running it's as if nothing has ever happened.

5. turning it off an on at this point will make it behave as normal, but leaving it off for more than around 10 minutes will make it start to get worse again.

It's 100% isolated to the screen. it does it when no input is plugged in ( 'the no signal detected screen)

it's as if something has to warm up, or charge up somwhere. Any ideas? It;s a 225BW

p.s I've got to the point of having to leave it on all night tonigth as I need to be able to use it tomorrow. I fear it is truly on it;s last legs tonight, hence the 3:51 post :P

Is it still within warranty?

I had a old digimate at work that used to do something similar. Used to have to bash it and turn it off and on to get it working and get rid of the colour banding :D

Mine has started doing the same, started out with flickering backlight and have had the streaky grey thing twice now, turning it off and on again has worked so far but not sure how much longer it'll hold out for.

When it does go I'll attempt to change out the caps to see if it fixes it but wont touch it until it goes completely.

EDIT: 225BW too.

Mine Same

I have the same monitor and it had the same problem. took the issue to the manufacturer and they replaced it for me, the only thing i had to do was pay for shipping. it was 18 months old.

If its still under warranty I wouldn't just leave it.

That digimate I mentioned only last a month after it started doing this but granted that may have been me "gently knocking" it every morning...

I doubt it's still in waranty. Can't even remember where I bought it from I'm going to check right now though.

glad (?!?) to see I'm not the only one.
By the way it's started flickkering in normal use now... trying ever so hard to finish a vital piece of work before it goes completly.

edit: bought it on the 5th of december 2006

second edit: 3 year waranty. :(

I have a screen at home that does this, sometimes punching it fixes it

Needless to say, it's way out of warranty :p

New monitor time

it's gone dark now.... and flickering fast, giving me a blinding headache. This is really, really not a good time to need a new monitor :(

'fml'

Mine went out of warrenty about four weeks ago which sucks :(

has yours got this problem aswell? [edit] just read thurther up, sorry.

update: borrowed a friends screen.

I took mine apart, sure enough ont he power board there were 3 caps that were obviously gone - bulging tops.

i've got 2 of the 'none standard' 820uf /25v caps being delivered to a local old fashioned radio-shop (little gold mine that place!) so will attempt a repair before hitting the 'proceed to checkout' button.

Will be very interested to hear your results obviously :D

Good luck buddy, just be careful and make sure your 100% your happy with what you've done before turning it on!

yea, dont worry about it.

i'll post pics of the process. I'm not banking on it fixing it, but there are 3 bad caps on that board, so logic tels me replacing them is going to make some differnce, whether it's the right kind of difference I dont know!

at the grand total of about £1 worth of caps I have not got much to loose.

Yeh, that was my opinion too, but I figured I'd wait until it goes to the point of being unusable, currently it flickers for a minute or so before coming on properly, how long did yours do that for before getting to the state it's in?

Rock on :D

Maybe I'll open mine up and take a look so next time I'm near a shop that sells caps I can get some replacements :)

Stoked you got it repaired :D

hey, got a bit more time to reply now...

I have pictures which I will upload later on.

there were 3 bad caps, as you know. 2x 820uf 25v and one 330uf 25v. I have the extremly helpful lady at boltons 'modern radio' shop to thank for sourcing the 820's as they're apparently none standard. she got them for me within 24 hours - result!

borrowed an iron from uni as I left mine ont he kitchen bench at the back door in my haste to travel back to uni last time I was at home :(

repair took no longer than 5 minutes and putting it back together was a breeze. I think it's lucky being that the repair was needed on the fairly simple power supply board, rather than the board that must process the signal.

result was instant. It works like it's new now.

Your screen will fail Dano, no doubt about it. I'd probably leave it until it does fail beore you repair it as I'm guessing that the capacitors will be more identifiable as bad once it has failed completly. unless you just pop it open for a luck. If it does turn out to be the same set of caps as mine and you're really having problems getting them give me a shout and I'll help you out. They cost me like £1.50 for all 3.
