Looking for a nvidia single card (deff dont want ati had to many issues with 5850)havent kept an eye on nvidid for a while what would be my best option be in this price range.
 
If you had a lot of trouble with one card doesn't mean you will have trouble with all ATI cards, I've had a few, no problems at all. It's just unlucky if one fails on you imo.
 
thanks for all the input,dont really want 2nd hand,if i can find good reputable dealer i might.the issues i had was hd5850 ,brought this for dirt2'the demo runs fine but full game keeps crashing and failing to start i've spent 10-15hrs trying to get it to work old,drivers,newdrivers,old and new versions of games for windows live,fresh format of win7/64bit with no luck irritating thing is put my 8800gt and the game runs perfect,as i said so does the demo on 5850,shame really but i've just given up with it
 
Have you jumped the CMOS or updated the BIOS ? It could fix the ATI problem.

The best new, Nvidia card for that money is the gtx275 for £230. The problem is you could have a 4890 that will equal/beat it for £100 less.

If you want Nvidia its a second hand card you need.
 
have you tried other games on your graphics card, does the crashing still occur?

Have you check the tempurature of your card, cpu, is there enough airflow?

Where did you get the Dirt 2 game? reinstalled the game? updated all drivers including window drivers? patches for dirt 2.
 
Nvidias current offerings are just rubbish. As others have said, wait for Fermi. ATI is a hell of a lot better than nvidia at the moment so buying an nvidia at the moment would just be stupid. Definitely wait :)
 
updating bios do you mean mobo or the 5850, its a steam download iv'e uninstalled and run regestry cleaner a few times it's in a new build,gigabite,p55-ud2 the mini itx,i5,4gd ram,corsair 650w supply,and antec 900 realy good air flow,did try boarderlands it didn't crash but did seem to pause 2-3secs after loading a level, the confusing thing is the dirt2 demo runs fine,did think of rma for a swap not sure what i can say is really wrong with it,occasionaly when dirt full game loaded it would run really slow,menues& max30fps ingame nothing set to ultra,any of you had issues with dirt2/5850
 
does really sound like a GPU issue if other games are playing up to, does the graphics card feel hot when under load? have tried running any benchmarks?

you can get freeware software on the tinternet that watches the gpu temp, i guess it's a new hard drive aswell if it's a new build.

also are you running a stock speed on the graphics card and cpu?
