I am going to get a new Router to go with a hopeful new ADSL2+ connection. My line is 8000 miles long and I am under the impression that the v4 version of this router with its Broadcom chipset and the DGTeam custom firmware is my best choice.

How do I make sure its a v4 and not a v5? Is a new one likely to be a v5? Should I go second hand?

I think there are only 4 versions of the DG834, its the DG834G that has a version 5 but don't quote me on that. I too am looking around for one of these, would be nice to know what version the OcUK stock currently on this week only is.

just had this same trouble myself Fox, and couldnt find a sure answer.

However, the DG834GT which is often Sky Broadband Branded is (as far as i can tell) Broadcom chipset only. So if you get one of them (i got on the other day for £18) then you should be right.

If not, i know of someone selling a V3 for peanuts.

A customer of mine bought a DG834 a couple of months ago (not sure where) and it was v3  So there seems to be a lot of old stock out there. I'm pretty sure it says on the box, so may have to have a look at some high street stores unless online ones state the version (not likely).

Ouch, tricky.

Whats the deal with the Sky ones guys?

the broadcom chipset (ie the GT and v4 model have this chipset) With this chipset you can tweak the snr margins etc to get a higher speed out your line with the DGTeam firmware.

So this chipset is the important bit and not whether its a V4 or not?

I want to use it with an LLU ADSL2+ connection on a long line :)

Do all the Sky ones have this?

Seems this router has the WOL function via web the interface when flashed to DGteam firmware, can anyone please confirm?

Also there is a DG834G and a DG834GT model where the only difference I can make out is the GT has super G wireless.

Ideally I would like the broadcom chipset DG834GT with DGteam firmware for the WOL. Am I right in thinking this is correct and achievable?

apologies for hijack OP

Yes and Yes.

Nice just sniped a DG834GT (definitely a broadcom chipset) for £27 delivered.

Will chuck on DGteam firmware 0848 - heres hoping the WOL works well :)

edit: apologies for the link previously, totally forgot about that rule *facepalm* thanks for removing :)

Just got my V5, for £18 inc postage it's a steal! I ran speedtest.net, got 1.2mbps down, then stuck this in instead and now I have 5.26mbps.

Happy days! Might still get a V4 if I spot one cheap enough, just so I can push it a bit further. :P

The buttons are annoying, if you try to move it round and knock one off, that's not cool. I'd rather not have them.

So basically to all reading, get a V4! I only got this V5 because it was £18 and I watched one go for £35, so I could make a slight profit if I wanted to change for a V4.

i have the dg834 v4 router model and all i can say its the best modem i have ever used. so easy to setup in bridged mode and rock solid connection.

also with dgteam firmware there is a firmware file with latest dsl driver from broadcom instead of netgear old dsl driver.

i am abit dissapointed that the dgteam firmware seems to be abandon atm.

1.2mbps to 5.26mbps.. christ did you have cup and string before?!

Basically yeh, it's called a Siemens Gigaset SE587. :P

I was using that as a modem, then plugged that into a WGR614 V9.

EDIT: Having issues using windows 7 with the new router, I have two XP computer that work perfectly when the W7 computer is turned off, then when I turn that one on, everything goes all slow. I also can't access any networked drive from the W7 computer, and can't access any of the drives in the W7 computer from the XP computers. (I have mapped my second hard drive and DVD drive in the W7 computer so my Netbook can use them).

Yes but the chipset depends on the version with the G.

The GT only uses the Broadcom one.

I went to a customer today who had slow broadband speeds. I checked the router stats and it was connected at 160k  never seen it that low before. Turned out to be a dodgy filter, so it jumped up to 1400k afterwards, which isn't too bad because they are a few miles away from the exchange.
