Am I on 21CN?

A quick google on your router model suggests it needs a software update to do ADSL2+. But it made no mention of how to get it.

I am actually not that bothered about download limits if there is an offpeak allowance. My henious crime which caused Plusnet to ruin my connection was to download a whole 20gb at peak times. This was an unusual month as well - normally I download only about 15gb in peak times.

Top spec (non LLU) on A&AISP only provides for 10gig in peak - and I think you can "borrow" against the next month as well but if you use 20 one month you'd have to pay per gig for all peak time useage the next month :S

Peak hours are the opposite to most other SP's though, as they are business oriented so peak hours are office hours 9am-6pm. When I'm in work :)

Upload also suggests not - "20"CN ADSL1 is usually fixed at 448kbit on residential lines - whereas on 21CN upload will run upto ~1.3Mbit - mine usually syncs somewhere between 928 and 1152kbit.

I'm still on an upload of 448kbit and my downstream speed remains unchanged since I posted this thread.

So, I contacted Plusnet to ask when I was moving to 21CN.

They've informed me I am currently on 21CN and its active and working on my line.

How can I confirm this? You guys are saying I'm not on it, they claim I am

One of the posts above said that your router might need a software update to handle ADSL2+, have you looked into that?

The reason why some people thought you were still on 20CN is because your upstream is still at 448Kbps, but this is normal because Plusnet cap all of their 21CN users at this upstream to prevent instability. You can ask to have that cap removed but they don't recommend it if you have a long line like yours for stability reasons.

Have you tried removing the ring wire from your phone sockets?

I've replaced the router since I made this thread - I now run a Netgear DG834GT with DGTeam firmware. Is there anything on the routers control panel I can post here?

That only tells you the sync rates and data stats over the interfaces - not what mode its connected in, etc. unless its different in a newer version of the DGTeam firmware.

Just found this on the router:

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 8000
Channel: INTR, Upstream rate = 448 Kbps, Downstream rate = 2016 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: G.DMT
Channel: Interleave
Trellis: ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime

Google tells me G.DMT is not ADSL2. Why therefore are Plusnet telling me I am on the 21CN service?

Gosh I hate subjects where I'm quite obviously out of my depth :p

Have you tried using the DMT tool?

You need v8.07

I'm using the same router as you and the same DGTeam firmware:

On the DMT Tool it clearly shows what ADSL mode you are running at - in my case ADSL2+ although I don't get any improvement over ADSL as my line is too long :(

p.s. I could squeeze another 512 Kb out of my line but this means that my line sometimes drops in the evening when the SNR margin drops too low.
I would rather have a stable line :D

p.p.s to avoid confusion, I'm on O2 LLU not MAX DSL i.e. BT Wholesale

Wow, thats pretty useful. Here is the output. It seems to indicate to me I am on ADSL not ADSL2? Does this mean I am not on the 21CN network? Why do Plusnet tell me I am?

The indicates that you are on just normal ADSL, yes. If plusnet tell you you are on 21CN then they are lying. Or perhaps they were going to attempt it and your line wasn't suitable.

Probably that screenshot in an email to their technical support would do the trick. It says it pretty clearly there, perhaps put a ring round the ADSL part.

Is there a simple, easy thing I can quote to them to prove this when I get back to them?

It's possible that they could have put you on an 8meg product which is very similar to the normal ADSL Max product, as you're on a long line and they might have decided you wouldn't see the benefit of the 24meg ADSL2+ product.

I guess you could ask them what product they have put you on, if they're saying you're on 21CN.

Looks like you are on WBC "21CN" but on the ADSL1 product.

Thats a pretty harsh frequency cutoff - ADSL2+ would be pointless.

I was considering moving to O2 LLU.

With my line status as it is, what practical effect would this have? I'm 'happy' with my current speed. Would I see a reduction moving to the O2 LLU product?

IME with 21CN/ADSL2+ I wouldn't expect any more speed on your line by going over to ADSL2+, certainly nothing significant anyway.

If you could take a little instability, you might be able to persuade your SP to talk to BT and ask for your profile to be hard locked to a 6dB SNR (it looks like yours is currently set to 9dB), which should give you an extra ~750k...
