I am new here and I never overclocked a cpu till now. I would like some to guide me through the process of overclocking my AMD Athlon IIX4 Quad Core 620 2.6GHz to 3.0 GHz.

I do not wish to fry anything. I just bought the system two weeks ago from overclockers uk.

I appreciate if someone would be kind enough to answer me.

I have the following System:-

AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 620 2.60GHz
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 Motherboard (ver 2.0)
Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5C TwinX Dual Channel
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
LG GH22NS40 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500 GB Hard Drive
AMD Approved CPU Cooler
Corsair CX 400W ATX Power Supply
AMD Approved CPU Cooler
Coolermaster Elite 335 Case - Black

Hi Ivan

In the bios you should have a option to change the HTT.

Change it from the stock of 200 to 231

Set your vcore to around 1.385 for now to test and see if its stable. Can you post up a cpu-z screen shot after to see your memory speed and HT link/NB to ensure they are all okay at the new HTT.

What memory do you have (spec) and what is it currently set at including timings?

Hi lemzip

Thankyou for your prompt response.

My current settings at stock including memory specs are these

My memory is 1066 GHz RAM

I will be sending other photos when I do the new settings in Bios.

I just bought an AMD 965, I increased the voltage on the northbridge and ran it at 2600mhz.

I don't know if this is ok for your cpu, I haven't had an AMD since my socket 754 lol.

Sorry for my ignorance,

In Bios I have HT Link Frequency, is it the same as HTT or should I change the CPU Frequency (MHz) instead? I am asking because it's the CPU Frequency which is at 200 MHz and I cannot find the HTT field.

Secondly I don't know from where to change the vcore settings.

I will be trying tomorrow afternoon by reading the MB manual. Here it's almost midnight.

Thanks

Ivan

no leave the HT link at around 2000Mhz, its not the same as the HTT however they are linked.

Anywhere from 1800-2200 is the sweet spot, nothing more will give a increase.

Yes, you can oc the NB no issues, i run mine at 2600.

We will get his 3Ghz then work on other settings first. Small steps.

the one you want on your board is CPU frequenxy (Mhz) i think

Can you modify that option, it looks blue'd out?

edit: you might need to press control+f1 at your main bios screen.

Hello piroi002,

welcome to OcUK forums! :)

Please read and understand the forum rules and enjoy your stay . . .

I do not have the HTT in bios :-(

I can see that even though you are new to overclocking you have dived right in there and start having a play with the BIOS, no holding you back! :p

To get your AIIX4620 from 2.6GHz to 3.0GHz should be as easy as changing the HT ref. Clock from 200 to 231 . . .

  • 13x200 = 2600
  • 13x231 = 3000
The HT ref. Clock is called CPU Host Clock Control on your particular board. Before you do this I would suggest resetting your memory back to default (800MHz). Once you set the the HT ref. Clock up from default 200 to overclocked 231 both the CPU-NB MHz and HT Link will also be overclocked, this may *or* may not cause you a problem so keep an eye on them, for the purposes of keeping things simple and overclocking in smaller steps you can reduce the speed of both the CPU-NB and HT Link by simply lowering their multipliers from stock [x10] to [x9] . . . however I don't think either of them will have any trouble running at 2310MHz . . .

Just make sure you either reset the BIOS back to stock or manually adjust the ram settings back to stock, as it stands in the image above as soon as you begin raising the HT ref. Clock your gonna be overclocking the memory as well as the CPU, CPU-NB & HT-Link . . . smaller steps is best when your new/learning, overclocking several things at once is gonna cause more confusion when things don't work!

P.S: I have a similar chip to you and they clock quite well, I don't see 3.0GHz being a problem for you! :)

Re overclocking help

I managed to rise the HT ref. Clock from 200 to 231 and leaving the memory at stock value 800 MHz it the Northbridge at x13.

What do I need to do more, like tests etc etc etc.

Thanks for your help

re overclocking Athlon ii x4 620

I have run OCCT programme for 30 minutes without errors. The tempreture of the CPUs went up to 53 degrees as seen in the screenshot that you can see in this link together with the cpuz screenshots

Is it ok or do I need a better cooler?

What other tweaks do I need to do? Can I redo the memory at 1066Mhz as it was before?

Regards

Ivan

Thats about your limit on the std cooler. Any higher you will start losing stability. my 620 does 2.6ghz on 1.0vcore nice and cool overclocking im 3.8Ghz stable but i use it in a spare pc so 2.6 is its 24/7 clock. Get another cooler if you would like to go higher. you are fine leaving like that if your happy.

Hi Ivan,

that looks like a good start, I'd say download Prime95 and run the *blend* test for a while, play some games or basically give the computer a good testing to see how it holds up

That seems ok and if you don't overclock the chip a lot more I think your cooler will be fine!

To get the memory running back at DDR2-1066 you will need to set the HT ref. Clock to 266MHz but that will push the processor up to 3458MHz which maybe a bit much right away

  • 13x231 = 3003 (462MHz Memory)
  • 13x266 = 3458 (532MHz Memory)
I would test the clock as it is for the moment then if you want to push the memory back to DDR2-1066 speed you could perhaps try reducing the processor multi from [x13] to [x11.5] then dialling up the HT ref. Clock from 231MHz to 266MHz which will give a CPU speed of 3059MHz and a memory speed of DDR2-1066, you would also need to dial down the CPU-NB multi and the HT-Link multi to [x8] so it doesn't run too fast. There may be a problem with some games running laggy if you change the CPU-Multi lower than the default [x13] but you can test that and let me know . . .

P.S: Can you go back to your previous post #12 and click [EDIT] and delete the massive full quote you made of my post please . . . you don't really ever need to fully quote someone as it makes the thread harder to read due to double text . . .many thanks! :)

I have decided to leave everything as it is. I am going to download Prima95 and perform a blend test tonight while I am asleep. Tomorrow I will post my results here as usual.

I will be buying a cpu cooler in the future because of the summer heat. Here in Malta the temp rise to 40 deg celcius in summer so I better buy a better cooler. They are not that expensive.

One last thing, I downloaded Everest and it showed this info about my ATI HD 4870 Video Card - GPU Clock 600 MHz (original: 750 MHz)

Why is the GPU underperforming by 150 MHz? Is it because it is in idle (so to speak) and it increases its performance once I play a game?

After I played Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 and went into everest I saw the GPU Clock at 750 MHz but after a second or two it went down to 650 again.

Thankyou again for your help. I hope this topic which I started will help others overclock their Athlon ii x4 620.
