Just wondered, I've never had a brand new car before, but I have now and wantd to know how long I have to take it easy on the engine for? It's done 95 very steady miles so far and wonderered when I can stop driving like an old man.

Cheers,

G

I think with most cars these day they don't have a run-in period. However, I'd go easy on it for at least the first 1000 miles.

Take it back and buy one with 1k on it. It'll be identical, £3000 cheaper and you wont need to run it in.

Then Thrash the living daylights out of it for a couple of years & sell it on with FSH & Low mileage, Who cares what happens to it after then.

It's a 1.6 TDI Bluemotion MK6 Golf. I can't take it back cause it's leased :p

Didn't think about the owners manual! duh! Will have a look :)

Thanks,

G

Leased = Thrash it !!!
Well you have the Keys so just Thrash it anyway it's a car.

I doubt you'll need to run it in.

Oh and fail for buying a brand new bluemotion.

lol fair comment, it is leased, but I'm the one who'll be driving it for 3 years so I don't want to knacker it lol

Keep an eye on your oil & water regularly & keep it within service intervals & you cannot thrash it to much tbh as the limiter stops you, If you do kill it then Send it back & get a new one same day it's Leased mate.
Just learn how to late brake & keep your rolling speed up. You will need a new set of pads every service though. :D

lols :p

I'll admit I would NEVER buy one of these, but I must also admit that it's very nice. It IS underpowered compared to my MK5 (1.9tdi) But is a LOT more powerful than the 1.6SE that I've got parked next to it.

One thing I was wondering though, this whole Start-stop technology... I was always told it uses more fuel to start the engine again than it does to leave it running? Is that not right?

On your average car yes, but cars with that technology are optimised for it so it's more efficient.

Keep an eye out the back window.

Once it starts spitting daisys out the back, you will need to get the 'bluemotion trip replaced'. Expensive job at a VW main dealer as it needs to be soldered in using a virgins hair.

My dad told me an interesting story about running cars in a while back.

Years ago, probably as many years ago as I am old (22) he was given a company car, brand new. They also gave his mate one, identical cars. My old man being a bit anal took it easy, ran it in perfectly. His mate on the other hand ragged the crap out of his from day 1.

Anyway, when ever they would have a "race" his mate would beat him..not be a little bit but by a looooooooong way. so it makes you wonder if it is worth running an engine in..
