Scots 'drink 46 bottles of vodka'

I've never really understood why the English people have helped the Scotch people more than any other regional group throughout the years including the Welsh, Irish etc. Probably down to oil but we all know that is gone.

i dont think you guys understand.

IT IS AN AVERAGE PER ADULT.

that means take out all the people who dont drink. drink less often, etc. that means a lot of people will be drinking 2 - 3 bottles of spirits a week. remember it is against some religions to drink. pregnant women dont drink. if you add all these up then yes it is a problem.

I'm not really sure how people keep missing this, for every single person above 18 that doesn't drink it would need someone to be drinking DOUBLE the amount listed in the OP to compensate for his lack of drinking. This data added to data with numbers of who does and doesn't drink would make for a far more interesting read, because it would give us an average of only drinkers which would be much higher. Its simple sales numbers/population, which also excludes alcohol bought elsewhere, though I'd guess the numbers of people doing a quick trip to Calais to buy wine would be lower than the numbers doing that in South East England.

But really we just want to know what the top say 100k drinkers were averaging a week, as those would be some impressive numbers indeed, in any country.

So is this meant as a congratulatory thread to the Scots who are punching well above their weight here in terms of keeping the drinks industry flowing? If that's the case then well done guys and girls, I'm heartened to see that you're doing your bit for the British economy.

It's certainly a positive thread for me - my other half is currently studying brewing and distilling, so more alcohol consumption in Scotland means less chance of me having to move when he graduates ;).

Scots not scotch.

9 x 70 cl = 6.3 litres

6.3 litres divided by 6 = 1.05 litres each

you guys drink over 1 litre of vodka each in a night? and you dont think its a problem? lol

It would be if we did it every night. Understand?

Only problem it causes is the tricky drive home past the orphanage. Damn kerbstones...

I muck up those figures given that I don't drink anything other than around twelve bottles of Hoegarrden per year. As for the Buckfast comments, it's a problem with the neds or as those in England say, chavs. I'm sure that as much is consumed by similarly neanderthalic characters the length and breadth of these isles and not just in Scotland.

Alcoholism only exists in Scotland.
England and Wales don't have the issue.

46 bottles of vodka doesn't really sound that much. I'd reckon in a year I get through more whisky than that.

Oh it is? Damn, I better email my bosses and let them know to shut down all their rigs as they're wasting their time and will have to sack the 2000 people working here onshore

For everyone saying it isn't a problem - care to explain why it costs NHS Scotland £3.5BILLION per year to deal with alcohol related health issues (whether that be disease or treating the effects of drunken violence)? A truly staggering amount of money for a country with a population of 5m, and a "heavy drinking" population of probably half that.

Scottish people definitely drink more - especially older people. Every pub here seems to be full of drunk 50+ year-olds from about midday!

edit: I'm in dundee atm.

edit2: also a LOT of people seem to have no idea what the word average means.

If we targeted poverty in the poorest areas of Glasgow I'm sure it would go a long way in lowering Scottish alcohol consumption averages.

Life expectancy in the East end of Glasgow is 54. The murder rate of Glasgow as a whole is the highest in Western europe and DOUBLE that of London and Manchester.

And what do we hear about on the national news? Stabbings in London. The fact is England doesn't care about these shocking statistics coming from Scotland. No British unity here.

lolwut? What are we meant to do? Will us feeling more sad about it make it better?

News about London is much more relevant to the population of England than news about Scotland.

Either way, those people who excessively drink in Scotland are probably the same people who hate England and suffer from a collective Napoleon complex.

What help is this?

More than other regions?

Are you just spouting crap because you don't actually know anything of substance on the subject?

It's a bit more impressive when you think its 24.77 units a week of special brew and white lightning

MW

24.77 units is 24.77 units, regardless of whether it is Special Brew or Polish Pure spirit :)

It's like asking which weighs more, a tonne of feathers or a tonne of lead.

Granted Special Brew and White Lightning are both vile so it could be classed as impressive to drink them I guess... :p

No doubt, but I think the point trying to be made was that the national news should report on important issues in the UK as a whole but that doesn't seem to really happen.
