Why do half the cars on the road drive with no lights, or just sidelights?

Are these people just incredibly stupid?

Does anyone here not use their headlights in low visibility conditions, perhaps they could explain why?

Yet when it's not foggy and the roads are clear, they put every ******* light on in their car!:D

My sidelights are on 24/7, just a habit of turning on lights I've always had when I started riding bikes.

It is tempting to leave my lights off as much as possible though. Flashing people with pop-up headlights rawks. The novelty will never wear off.

My sidelights are always on, they turn off with the engine so I never bother turning them off alltogether, plus my dashboard is stupidly dark so it helps with reading the dials.

To what end? If you want to be visible to other road users in low visibility, you need to use your headlights, not your sidelights. There is never any logic in driving on sidelights, whatever the visibility.

Do you switch your headlights on when it's foggy?

Okay, well driving in broad daylight with sidelights doesn't actually do any harm, and that isn't what I made this thread for... I am wondering why people don't use their headlights in low visibility. I just love waiting to pull out of a junction in fog, and having to spot morons appearing out of the gloom which are almost invisible.

When I came home the other night I was astonished how many people had either side lights or worse, no lights on in pretty poor fog
conditions. I actually counted 37 cars with no lights on via a 10 mile journey and here is a Housey fact, 35 were women! I would estimate that 30% of all cars I saw were wrongly lit for the conditions and most were women.

Some people don't turn on their lights to 'save' something, not too sure what it is they are trying to save but talking to my sister inlaw the other day she mentioned that she only turns her lights on when she really has to in order to 'save' something? Battery? Alternator? Bulbs?

She had no idea to be honest but I think in general it's just stupidity and ignorance. After all how many time have you seen a car travelling at night with no lights on, does make you wonder why it doesn't go through the drivers mind as to why all the buttons around the dash aren't lit?

Of course I do. As a previous biker I want to be seen and I'd rather have them on than not. Headlights go on when necessary.

People round here are all pretty bad. For the first time in ages I was up before work. IE I didn't roll out of bed and into my car, I had time to eat and walk the dogs. After realising morning TV is crap and I had nothing to do I set off to work early and it was still half light so to speak. Nobody had their lights on, peeople were pulling out of junctions last minute and generally doing 40+ in a 30.

It wouldn't bother me but I live in a place that get foggy very often and people should know better. On xmas day it was very thick and going dark when I picked up my gran. In front of me was a Merc 4x4 driver with no lights on whatsoever and he was driving out of a street lit road into the back and beyond without a care in the world. Numerous flashes didn't trigger any common sense either :(

Foggy AND misty?

Light reflects back from fog, try putting your full beam on while driving in it you'll have even worse visibility, it's actually easier to drive in fog with no lights on, yes it's completely wrong as it doesn't alert other drivers to you being there but that's why a lot of people do it.

The most important thing in fog is to BE SEEN. That means headlights.

I think what confuses some drivers is that we are told to use 'dipped headlights' in fog. Do perhaps they think 'dipped headlights' means sidelights?

I am aware that light bounces back off fog, that is why you drive slowly in thick fog. You don't turn off your headlights because that's when other road users will pull out or cross in front of you and you'll have an accident, because you are invisible to them.

I use my headlights all the time. Mainly because I have correctly fitted (fox :)) HID's and I think it makes my car more upper class than it is.

I wait in hope for the day when day-running lights are made compulsory.
Shame it'll never come though..

I swear it's worse over here in Belgium though, as 98% of the cars are either silver or grey.

I look forward to it, during the daylight i usually have my sidelights on (its force of habbit from driving a hard to see black MX-5 for a few years), then i'm one of the the first to wack my dipped beam on when the conditions permit.

Mine's a force of habit as i lived in norway for a year with a foreign car, so i had to turn my lights on manually every time i got in.

Obviously it's different having them on in Norway as most roads are single-lane and windy, but even on 'normal' roads like in the rest of Europe, the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks.

Doesn't help that the current crop of cars fully light up the dash even when you have no lights on.

The amount of time i've flashed women and got no response......
