Scots 'drink 46 bottles of vodka'

^that.

Life expectancy in the East end of Glasgow is 54. The murder rate of Glasgow as a whole is the highest in Western europe and DOUBLE that of London and Manchester.

And what do we hear about on the national news? Stabbings in London. The fact is England doesn't care about these shocking statistics coming from Scotland. No British unity here.

Haha I've been saying that for years. :p

You hear the BBC going on about how dangerous London is for a few guns.. its a joke.

No doubt, but I think the point trying to be made was that the national news should report on important issues in the UK as a whole but that doesn't seem to really happen.
The problem here is twofold though, firstly you have to realize the the population of Scotland is lower than that of London not an extremely large or influential crowd of people.

Secondly the Scottish don't want any of this unity crap themselves, all this independence and devolution stuff is tearing them further away from us.

*bows*

You're very welcome \o/

:D

It's certainly a positive thread for me - my other half is currently studying brewing and distilling, so more alcohol consumption in Scotland means less chance of me having to move when he graduates ;).

I didn't even know you could do that but good luck to him.

Scottish people definitely drink more - especially older people. Every pub here seems to be full of drunk 50+ year-olds from about midday!

edit: I'm in dundee atm.

If you stopped going into the Counting House... :p Heading up the Perth Road should see you not meeting so many 50 year olds, stop walking after you get to the Art Bar or Drouthys though as beyond that you'll find a lot of older people in the pubs again.

Joking aside it's not good for the average to be so high, considering I know a fair few people who either don't drink or drink very little there must be some people drinking an astronomical amount to keep the average that high.

News about London is much more relevant to the population of England than news about Scotland.

Either way, those people who excessively drink in Scotland are probably the same people who hate England and suffer from a collective Napoleon complex.

The BBC News at Six for example is a national program for the UK, not England or the South of England. I am sure there are plenty of people in Northern England that get annoyed with hearing about London on the News all the time.

People in Scotland don't hate the English as whole, just certain parts of England some of the time. And you are right in that Alcohol will fuel an idiot's blanket response of "we hate England". Scot's don't just pick up a bottle of Whisky and decide they hate the English. Well maybe some do.

I don't think that's entirely true though, if there was a referendum for Scottish independence tomorrow I'd bet you that it would result in us voting to stay as we are.

True, but public opinion sways vastly. I don't think it will be so clear cut at the general election though. A lot of people are fed up with Labour which Scotland have traditionally voted for, so who do they vote for instead? It sure as hell won't be conservative. I can see more people moving to SNP than Lib Dem.

Both good points. Especially on BBC news coverage. They have been consistantly held over the coals in light of reviews on the subject...

Do I expect anything to change? Do I ****.

I don't think that is the case in my opinion. Yes it is the thorn that will not dissapear, but SNP business is and should be performing government until that time.

If a referendum were to take place, campaigning would obviously follow from both sides. I'm not talking wild changes here, but you would need to look at opinion polls closer to the event (and after the changes in Westminster).

Lets wait and see how more discontented we become at the disperancies in the next few years..

haha Love how this thread has gone from someone having a dig at Scotland to the referendum. (For my money people will not vote to split away).

Being part of the Scottish mafia (referring to the disproportionate amount of Scots that work abroad in the oil industry) with a smattering of English mainly Northerners. There never is any problem getting along. Plenty of banter. Can't even say the Northerners get on with Southerners in England - spoken to plenty from north of England who will quite happy to say get rid of the Londoners! Would they actually vote for it though?... Well maybe - no one likes a southerner ;)

Scotland/England always going to be an issue that the minority going to make a big noise about while the rest us just trying to get on to make a living. Nationality always an easy to wind up people on though. All of us far from perfect in the same mess! No doubt there is a drinking culture but everyone still seems to function..most of the time!
