When the eye sees a bunch of small pieces of an overall image one after another in quick succession and makes it look like you can see the full image.

For example if you take a long cardboard tube (christmas wrapping tube is perfect) and look down through it. If you waggle it from side to side quickly over a short distance it will seem like you can see a wider overall image.

What I need to know is what is this called scientifically? My googling skills have failed me on this one. I will be making use of this in my dissertation this year which I have to give an introduction on today, it'd be great to know the real word for this :)
 
Thanks guys, can't find anything specific on image retention but it sounds scientific so I'll use it anyway for now! :D
