OcUK Photo Comp - Season Nine : Round One - "Three Techniques" DISCUSSION

Heh - don't hold your breaths guys - I'm seriously considering not entering this year and concentrating more on specific photographic projects. I have stacks of ideas but twisting them around to make them fit into monthly restrictions doesn't hold the same attraction it used to. I dunno - we'll have to see - maybe it's just the lack of sunshine that's getting me down :D

I do agree with you. I find that I produce better photographs when there aren't any restrictions. Having these restrictions (themes) means that you photographs will suffer unless you either get really lucky or work super hard, which is the point of the whole thing really.

I'll still enter for a laugh though and to get some decent crit.

Although if I am honest, I am really stumped with the theme too.

You chose the theme!

In one aspect I find that a bit disappointing (2009 champ not defending his crown) but i can see where you're coming from. No offense to anyone else who posts but certainly in the year I've been here you are one of the more creative photographers / digital manipulators with your entries in the comps and i think it would be a big miss. Cos if apart from anything else you keep everyone elses game up as well to compete at times!

You've said yourself you're full of ideas and to a degree thats half the battle with the comps. Having looked at those links you posted certainly the people shots could fall into this months theme. portraiture / Shallow / Deep DoF, convert it to B&W and bobs your uncle :p

You chose the theme!

Yes, but I didn't choose it so I could have an advantage. My other idea was going to be 'Portrait using only natural light', but I chickened out as thats like going totally against what I enjoy shooting. :)

How about 'Long Exposure Landscape' should I get the opportunity again ;)

Sorry to hear that fella!

Go on give it one more year?!

I wont be doing much this year with the comp and will be pulling this months entry as I've got so much going on with my studio and looks like its going to be a busy year shooting the lady's ;) but will keep having a look to see how everyone is doing. :)

New entry in. I had to beat the **** out of my model to get this look ;)

Was going to post in a new thread but figured it's worthy of a competition entry.

I may need some help describing the themes properly aswell ;)

Anyway, idea came from http://www.flickr.com/photos/aknacer/4089605729/ and i've just took it a little further. Thanks to SteveOBHave for sharing this guys work.

Best way to learn is to imitate, right? :D

I don't think you can make your own techniques up dude.

The entry must adhere to three of the below techniques.
Technique list: Backlighting, Blur, Bokeh, Centred Composition, Deep DOF, High Key, Leading Lines, Light On White, Long Exposure, Low Key, Portrait, Motion Panning, Rule of Thirds, Shallow DOF, Soft Focus, Stop Action, and Tilted Angle.
