Hi Guys

Brother gave me a HP Compaq NC4000 as he said it wasn't working, well when it boots the screen comes on but is just white, I have plugged in an external monitor and it boots into windows fine so I'm thinking about buying a second hand screen off the bay and putting it in to see if it works?

Sound like a plan or could it be something else? As I get a display from the VGA I figure the graphics can't be shagged but would like some advice before I blow £30 on a second hand LCD

Many thanks

What was the something else then? :)

I see your one below, but you have an issue when the screen is plugged in?

Or is there another thread?

screen all white means no data, could just need the cable reseating either at the back of the lcd or at the mainboard side, both will require some stripping of the unit.

does yours still boot even when screen is all white?

Yep you can hear the windows welcomes tune and it boots into windows fine..

Reseated both cables under the hinges bear the power button, mute speaker button etc etc and still no different, which leads me to believe the screen is duff itself........

Think I might take the plunge for £30 second hand replacement screen/housing/hinges basically the whole lot not bad for the price

Replacing the screen on the NC4000 is pretty easy, just a bit fiddly.

Did it to mine recently.

Having said that, I would guess the screen being white means lack of data as has been suggested, which would mean either the video chip is gone or the (fiddly) connecting cable. I cant see it coming loose, it was a very tight fit, but by all means make sure it isn't that as well.

But if the video chip had gone wouldn't that mean plugging a vga lead in at the rear would give me no display but it does?

Have reseated both leads twice and no change? Hmmm may see if I can get a spare or repair cheap off the bay and make one good out of two bad...... :)

true though i would have thought both outputs would need its own RAMDAC etc, so the subsystem could be fine but just the output path for the LCD gone.

I mean if you dont mind throwing a bit of money at it, they are good solid little laptops. I've had a 1.5Ghz one for a long time now, it goes around conferences and the like with me faithfully. Though its getting to the point now where it struggles with iPlayer and the like a bit, i;m thinking of finally replacing it :)

Looks like you may have been right, the replacement screen arrived and it does the same thing with the white screen ........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

May just throw it all on the bay for £50 and be done with it lol

Thanks
