Toilets, why is the handle always on the inside of the door?

Or is it just a coincidence that all the ones I've had the misfortune of needing to use recently have had the handle on the inside so no matter if you clean your hands you either have to wait until somebody opens the door coming in or grab a handle covered in other peoples urine to get out again :(

where else can it go. noob.

After witnessing the guy next to you pee all over the floor, wall and at least three of his fingers without washing you know it's never going to be a clean getaway.

Never really found a bathroom door to open out into a corridor mind.

Its worse when they pee all over your shoes ,had this in a club once so I wiped my shoes over the back of his jeans then one of his many, many mates that I did not realise were also on the loo said sorry to me on behalf of his drunk mate ,was lucky I did not get my head kicked in .

i do this...

Grab tissue from tissue machine
use one to turn the tap on and press soap
wash hands
use tissue to turn tap off
use tissue to open door

clean hands win!

This. I'm a bit of a Howard Hughes when it comes to public toilets. :D

Even worse is the cubicle doors that open inwards (which is pretty much all of them). You have to step right back and carefully avoid the filthy bog and puddles of "water" just to be able to open the door to get out. :(

Use loo roll, or wait for someone to open door, or kick the bottom of the door and sometimes i manage to use the handle with my foot, i always use one of those methods.

On but slightly off topic, why do cineme screens all have pull doors? When you go in you are laden with rediculously priced popcorn and gigantic beverages, would make sense that the door would push open to avoid spillage. Or is that the cinemas evil ploy!?

Most doors into buildings and rooms generally open inwards for emergency purposes i think? It's much easier for the fire service or police or whatever to break down a door that opens inwards because you only have to break the lock rather than smash through the whole door or knock the frame off the wall. I know toilets aren't locked generally but maybe it is something related to this. Also a fire hose is more likely to get stuck if it's being pulled through a door in a direction that pulls the door closed rather than pulling it open.

Someone could pass out in the cubicles if they are very drunk. But then if you look at it like that wouldnt they actually be in the way if the door opened inwards when they tried to open the door to get you out?

Meh.

I do the same but sometimes I take a bit of toilet paper instead if there are no towels.
After spending time with the Infection Control team and delivering hand washing lessons to kids I've become more obsessed with cleanliness in toilets.
About 2 months ago I was wee'ing next to a Doctor and he went to walk straight out so I challenged him.
He asked for my name and I said I looked forward to hearing from my Manager.
