I kid you not, Labour today have outlined plans for a tax on such items as sweets, fizzy drinks and other snacks could face a 'litter tax' added to their prices as it's these items that are foundlittering our streets.

Full Story

The mind really does boggle at times with Labour.

I like this quote a lot. :D

"There is nothing Gordon Brown won’t tax given the excuse.”

Tax all wasteful packaging, introduce pay as you litter schemes and don’t forget to tax the air that we breath.

I'm sorry, but there is now a tax for double posting. :p

Just introduce stupidly high fines for people caught littering, coupled with community service

That's exactly how it should be! Surely the company producing said products cannot be held responsible for people not dispoding of the litter properly.

Surely some provision was made many decades ago so that our council tax already covers this in the form of litter pickers?

Yes, I assume therefore this element of the council tax will be reimbursed as otherwise you would be being taxed twice for the same thing, which would never do.

Litter tax has got to be one of the most ridicuous ideas i have ever heard, if anything it will increase the amount of litter, as any previously borderline "can only *just* be arsed to find a bin" numpty will simply chuck it on the floor knowing that part of the cost of that mars bar now caters for some public servant to clear it up for you. In other words it will legitimise littering in the eyes of those who do it already, meanwhile those who do take the time to find a bin would be penalised.

They have a system in place, it's £50 for littering round here, problem is having people to enforce it and actually having the evidence when people deny it.

If the government represents the public but most of their stupid ideas are against the public so how does this work? I don't see this as a democracy.

but could you force it? if your paying a tax on sweets etc... because of litter then how are they justfied in giving you a fine?

Chewing Gum should be taxed more as it is notoriously harder to pick up than regular litter.

Stupid idea taxing sweet/crisp packets though.

They aren't justified and it wouldn't surprise me if they stopped the fines system as it doesn't appear to work. I'm not one for littering and it disgusts me when I see it but i fully expect people to litter more if they introduce said tax and people would feel justified doing it.
