Hi

I have a friend running a 8800 GTS and only plays World of Warcraft!

He bought a ATI 4870 for a cheap price but gets worse frame rates on WOW then with his 8800.

After some research it seems like WOW prefers Nvidia cards. He wants to swap his 4870 for a Nvidia 260.

After a quick google, a lot of people are complaining about poor frame rates from the 260, but all posts are around late 2008.

I found one post in early 2009 saying that after a firmware update his frames shot up a little.

If anybody here is gaming with a 260 and plays WOW.

Can you post your Frame rates and res you game at and at what settings you game at?

Cheers in advance

It's capped at 60FPS in game, but my 8800GT uncapped hit 110 - 115fps. Previously had some interesting artifact errors using Windows 7 with the GTX260 but back on Vista with no issues now. Runes perfect at 1440x900.

However, there's no reason that a 4870 would run particularly slow so i would suggest your friend look for other causes to performance issues rather than continually changing hardware.

What frame rates is he getting? What CPU/Ram does he have?

I run a [email protected], 4gb ram, 4850 512mb - I run 1680x1050, high settings (shadows down a notch) and get constant 60fps (capped @60) outside major cities, dropping to 40fps in cities and 25man raids.

WOW is more CPU dependant than graphics card dependant. If he wants to improve his frame rate i would reccomend going down the cpu route, theres going to be no difference between a 4870 & 260.

My nv260 is speed capped at 60 (vsync+max draw distance) everywhere but Wintergrasp or Dalaran - those places are cpu bound. Wintergrasp is more of a cpu + server lag.

I have a Q6600 at stock, 4GB DDR2 ram and a 260 maxcore thingy.

Dalaran kills my frames, but other then that I can play with good frames ( I have a fairly heavily modified UI) at 1680x1050 (soon to be upgraded). I turned vsync off and have everything on the highest settings.

The Card has impressed me. I was previously playing with an 8800.

my mate has a got the AMD X2 6000+ @ 3ghz

getting around 50FPS in general in Northrend but in Dalaran i hit 15fps – 25fps max with the 8800 and less with the 4870

he don’t have the game on high settings...... and Res 1680 x 1050

I just avoid Dalaran at busy times. My Dala HS is set to the Underbelly to give maximum reaction time once hearthing.

His CPU is much more of an issue than his card.
Also, disable addons, and see if that helps. Addons like quest helper take up a lot of resources.
