Step-Dad has decided he wants a laptop after I have a PC, mum has a laptop and his PC didn't survive the house move (claiming on insurance obviously :) ). Budget is £500 MAX - so please don't suggest something higher than it because you'll be wasting your breath so to speak ;)

So far the best I could find was an Acer Aspire 7715Z for £399.99 and I'm struggling to find much better within budget.

Uses for it are basic; general office work, web browsing, DVDs etc - there will likely be no gaming as he's not into that sort of thing, he just wants the best performance for the money really (so going to be looking at a dual core CPU, 3GB/4GB RAM, large(ish) hard drive and windows 7).

Just seeing what other people can come up with :)

Hi

Sounds like something along the lines of what i was wanting, so i'll bump your question.

anyone?

Should mention i would be happy with a 15.6" screen, so happy for the budget to go on other parts of the spec

How about this Asus X5DIJ, Intel Core 2 Duo T5870 2Ghz, 4Gb memory, 250Gb Hdd, 15.6" TFT, DVD/RW, Intel GMA 4500m graphics, wlan: b/g/n, 6 cell battery, Windows 7 HP.

I purchased one just a few weeks ago, not from here unfortunatly, for £399 (still is) and is vfm. Just google Asus X5DIJ and you'll find it.

Thanks for that. One question about Asus laptops, do they make their own, or farm it out to someone else?.

Asus are a major player when it comes to PC's, laptops and pc components, and infact do build their own laptops from the ground up. They also supply barebones to other major brands.

This particular laptop, is well built for a budget laptop. You will find that as far as external connections are concerned, it is slightly lacking, but as with everything in this world you get what you pay for.
