Know i didn't just sign for RMA . I will be looking on advice guys now on a new card for my system any idea's what about Nvidia the only thing is i have an Amd set up does this matter. It's an Asus hair Formula III .can i put a Nvidia card into what real is a AMD - Ati setup any Advice guys would be Great. Also the cooling thing I had four fans in my case and not a socket cooler on my CPU so must have got a faulty card Guys . I will take any advice use guys can give me on computers and Hardware after all use are the experts .

An Nvidia card will work in an AMD machine, but you can't SLI.

Once you RMA your card they will test it for faults and either repair it, or send you a new one. Nvidia won't have anything competitive at the high end until mid/late march at the earliest and you are just as likely, or maybe more likely as they will be the first batch, to have problems with that card as a replacement 5970.

What's your PSU? As that could be your problem if it's underpowered, NOT the 5970!

That's a very relevant question, please answer it :)

Hope and pray

Not sure of the make but it is a 1000 watt power supply so it should be ok then and it is a modular power supply as well . If the card was faulty how long would it take to get a replacement then .I would say i am in for a long wait if the card is faulty. had the card sure it wasn't any good to me anyway so i can wait a bit longer .I hope the card is faulty might get a good one the next time hope and pray.

I'm starting to wonder whether people delibrately try and find something wrong with ATI cards or just fake the fact they have a ATI card and complain about them because they just don't like ATI.

In my experience, ATI drivers are just more problematic than NVidia ones, despite the hardware being better.

Recently, I've had to junk a 4870 in one machine because it refused to run GRiD without crashing (replacement GTX275 works fine). I've had to replace a 3650 in my HTPC because it caused blocking artifacts with BBC HD in Win7 Media Center (known issue and replacement 9500GT works fine). I've also got the well documented but never fixed issue with ATIKMDAG.SYS crashing on my work machine if I try to run Vista with Aero enabled.

When you factor in things like the inability to easily force on triple buffering on a per-game basis in Catalyst like you can in Forceware, I'm less than impressed with ATI's software efforts.

Despite all this, I'm about to buy a 5850 - wish me luck :D

did you OC the card? if there is a problem with the card then they would replace it normally

Hmmm before my 5870, my 4870 512m ran grid at 1920*1200 perfect!!! so not sure why you say it won't run grid???

Its a known ATi thing, ATi cards are cheap as they broken pieces of ***** (thats not me having a dig, that just how it is unfortunately).

It's hard to read your posts!

Find out what Power supply you have and the ampages on the different rails, this is normally printed on the side of the PS itself and post them here - it definately sounds like a power issue.

Even though you have a 1000W PS the quality of PS's vary greatly.

//edit, Also you say the card felt hot went you took it out - was the GPU fan spinning ok? But remember that being hot to touch is not necessarily hot for a GPU!

I will take a look tonight when i get back from my computer class ok and post them later on I used to have two 4890 in crossfire and there was know problem then .When i had they first 4890 in it run ok when i bought the second one it wouldn't run the two card then i got the bigger power supply which is what i have now so you still think it's the power supply .

Because it wouldn't! :)

I know plenty of other people had no problems with GRiD using Radeon cards but the fact remains that I did and it was the card that was at fault. Eliminated everything else until only the graphics card was suspect (or rather the drivers) and ended up replacing the card and hey-presto, it worked fine.

Possibly the drivers conflicting with the specific combination of hardware/software in that machine but the end result was the same.
