Can anyone recommend any good websites for looking for villas in Spain. Most of them are so cheap and rubbish with only basic search features, if any.

Was recommend this site
http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/

which is good, but is there any more?

Also what's a good site for searching for things to do in the surrounding area? trip Advisor doesn't seem to do many places on their activity page.

And can anyone recommend a general area. We aren't looking for a beech get drunk holiday. A nice villa with bbq and pool. In a more remote place with good restaurants and bars. A vineyard tour and wine tasting place would be great. Other than that just an area where within driving distance there's a fair amount to do.

I go to Spain once a month, we have a place near Torrevieja. It's on the east coast, about 30 miles from both Murcia and Alicante. It is a popular destination but there are a few places around this area that are quieter. Orihuela, Quesada, Elche are a couple that I can think of.

If you are looking for the more cultural holiday, then the west coast is probably a better option but I have very little knowledge of that side. I have heard Jerez de la Frontera mentioned with regards to being a very large town surrounded by vineyards.

To be fair though, most rental places charge silly premiums. Depending on the region, you are best to look direct with owners. The cost saving can be as much as £150 per week

Have you tried jamesvillas, I've used them twice and got another booking for this summer. Used their villas in Spain and it was great, if you book now they have offers on car rental, insurance etc. May seem pricy but it's worth it, just do your homework when checking out the villas. Look at the pictures of the villas in detail, use google earth etc to see wants in the area.

Edit: stayed near Nerja, about hours drive from Malaga towards east. Our villas was up in mountain and about 10min drive from town for shopping, restaurants and drinks. Great place for all rounder, if you have car then loads to do and see along the coast. Beaches around Nerja ain't all that, but why bother when you have pool.

I've rented out a villa twice in this area (well just outside of it - Playa De Flamenca). I would thoroughly recommend the SE Spain. Beautiful part of the world.

it does depend what you want from a holiday. I was quite happy sitting at the villa, with the BBQ, pool and a skin full of drinks. It's only a short walk down to a complex with the vast majority of food you could wish for (Spanish - obv, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Hungarian, French etc)

This basically with good restaurants and local bars(not touristy places) and some sightseeing. Going to have rental cars so be able to travel.

The villa I rented as a private villa (shared pool), which enough local bars and other places to keep me occupied. However it did seem very English, as a lot of English folk were in the area. the complex at the bottom of the hill was massive, with bars and lots of food places. not sure if it's right for you, especially as I can't remember there being anything sightseeing wise in the local area.

it is cheap though, i rented a villa, for 8 nights, including flights, for £180 in March I believe.

Sight seeing wise, what are you interested in? Famous Landmarks? Old Churches? Museums? etc.

Anything really great views, landmarks. I always try and go on an alcohol tour. be it beer, spirit or wine. Local market would also be great. Basically good food for the bbq and quality wine whilst sitting by a pool . With a few things to go do/explore during the day. And a fe nights in a local restaurant or tapas bar.

anything upto about £1k for a week. for a 4 bed villa and pool.

Playa Flamenca isn't really for you then, there isn't much to do other than see the local bars and from what I know isn't really any sights. There's a brilliant market though.

Sounds as though you want somewhere which is more Spanish, than Spanglish (which Flamenca is).

Elche is apparently quite nice. If you go there you'll be landing in Murcia, which is quite possibly the smallest runway ever. Nice little region though :)

resurfacing this thread as I'm looking to book a villa in Spain this year. I was wondering what the weather is like in Spain mid September?

Looking for a private villa with pool and bbq etc. far away from the madden crowds... don't really enjoy the thought of places like Benidorm with thousands of English people roaming about.

Would prefer to stay somewhere more Spanish - I've heard (any may well be wrong) that that's more likely to be SW Spain near Jerez etc. rather than the SE side?

yep.
Anyone been to coin?

EDIT I've just replied to a 2010 thread!.

As in inland from Marbella?

My business partner rented a house there and when I visited it got broken into. So I don't like the area now.

But it is a very pretty area in the hills, goats and olive trees etc.

Some very nice properties, but it can be very isolated.

The road to the coast is very good, really quick decent road.

Defiantly take a trip to Gibraltar if you are in the area, about 1h30 mins drive. But park the car in La Línea de la Concepción, and walk!

You could also take a ferry to Tangier, Morocco, but I've not done that.
