.....I'm going on a rampage.

2.5% people. We didn't notice it go down, and we aren't noticing it go up!

There, I've vented.

Especially as it applies to TV's, processors and other niceties.

Why couldn't I have an interest in Jaffa Cakes instead? :(

Yeah it's a big deal over nothing. Stuff isn't more expensive now because of VAT (okay, marginally so), it's mainly due to the global economy and various other factors depending on the nature of the product. Looking at the PC market, it can be seen a lot of prices have increased dramatically since the economic downturn.

Did it stop you buying things before it dropped to 15%? Did you whinge about it back then?

It's utter madness. Most places didn't drop prices when the VAT went down anyway, and they haven't upped them since it went up.

I've got to admit I didn't much care when it went to 15% and I care equally little that it's gone back to 17.5%. It makes such a negligible difference to my life and I'd imagine to most people than the inconvenience of having it change was barely worth it in any real sense for retailers.

I care, but very little over 2.5%

I would prefer it remained at 15% mind ;) I never really noticed a lot of the people ranting about the 2.5% thing here, maybe the OP needs to take a deep breath?

:) I was joking. I think the only time I would truly notice is if it suddenly dropped to 0% or shot up to 25%. I don't have enough disposable income to buy items that a 2.5% reduction or increase would make a noticeable difference to.

It's not on here, it's all over the high street, the papers and the news. The day before it happened, I heard people walking about the local shopping centre actually saying they had better buy stuff now 'cos the VAT was going back up! I bet they saved pennies, a fiver at the most.

Yeah I suppose I see what you mean by that. Comet have been using that on the TV the last week or so.

What I hate is the fact that when it went down to 15%, stores didn't drop their prices, they just made more profit per item as they pay less tax. When the VAT went back up, instead of staying the same when it went down, stores actually increase prices, keeping their bigger profit margin.

You would have saved a whopping £16.75 on the top Intel i7 that OcUK sell before the VAT rise:

£770.25 (VAT @ 15%)
£787.00 (VAT @ 17.5%)

I don't think £16.75 would bother you that much when your spending three quarters of a grand on a CPU.

It's always been 17.5%, and only went down on a temporary basis.

And I say it again.... it's 2.5%!

Speak for yourself! It was`12.5% pre 1979 and the Conservatives put it up to 15% and then again put up by them to 17.5% in 1991 to pay for the back down on the poll tax.

I've had more years with the rate less than 17.5% than I have with it at 17.5%. :(
