As title. Got it this afternoon, installed in the mobo in me sig, and no matter I do, its only showing three cores, not four.
I've tried the following:

Reset everything to stock in the mobo bios.
updated to latest bios.
tried enabling "ACC" (as you do to unlock the other cores in a X2 or X3 phenom II) in the bios in the hope that would activate the forth core.
Done the "msconfig", boot, advanced, settings, only showing an option for max of 3 cores, 4 cores not selectable/not showing.

Cpu -z and the AMD overdrive software only show 3 cores/threads active.

Gonna try cpu in another AM3 mobo, different ram, to see it'll work but I doubt it.
Wadya reckon, RMA time?

If you maen the mobo bios "system information" it shows up as "Phenom II 955 X4", 3200hmz, with all the correct cache values as well.
So, the bios is detecting it as a 955 X4:confused:

^ Yup do that. If you havent done a clean install when you upgraded from your tri to a quad, windows seems to remember your previous cpu.

I wasn't aware that theres a Win 7 issue with core detection, I find that a bit hard to believe. I've currently got the 955 in another mobo (asus M4A785TD-M EVO, with some different patriot DDR3 ram and I'm about half way through installing XP pro, just wanna see what happens really to confirm wether the cpus at fault or me:p

Let us know how you get on but saying windows especially as you said it showed three cores and your prev cpu was the 720 :)

Thats a valid point and part of the reason for a fresh instal on a different h/d using XP:)
Anyways it looks like the 955 is ok afterall, just had a shufty in msconfig in XP and it gives me the option to select 4 cores (hurrah:D)
I'm gonna load a few more apps to confirm that all 4 are actually there and working, then I'll slap the 955 in the original pc with Win 7 installed, then try unchecking the nuber of cores and see what happens.
Thanks for the help guys, it appreciated.
i'll post back in about 45 mins with any and all results.:)

Ok boys and girls, it appears everything is working as it should be. Just checked the number of cores and every app I use shows 4, also prime stable for about 10mins.
So, when I reinstal the cpu in the original pc with Win 7, I'll uncheck the "number of cpus" thingy in msconfig, reboot and let the operating system detect the four cores.
I'll post tomoz with the result, and again thanks for the help guys.:)

Ok, update. All is sweetness and light, the 955 is now sitting in the main pc running Win 7, all 4 cores working at 3.6ghz, Vcore 1.45v (bit higher than I wanted/anticipated but once bedded in as it were, I'll try lowering the vcore a bit), prime stable after 4 hours, max load temps of 49c.
Again, thanks for the advice guys. :)

On a related topic, is there any disadvantage to using msconfig to recognise the number of cores? I'm thinking of trying to unlock a chip or two once my new motherboard turns up and would rather install Windows on the 'native' core number and clocks in case there's any instability.

Nope no disadvantage. Best to do it that way especially if the 5000+ has bad cores. Windows should automatically detect the number of cores anyway, though from the web it seems to be happening more than I would have thought.
