Men of War games on Steam starting from £4.41

Gah !! Damnit...

Thats one I was really waiting for during the xmas deals, it never surfaced so in the end I just bought it at the normal price from them.

Doh !

Looks like a more recent Commandos, am I right?

Its more like company of heroes, but without the base building and often on a larger scale (on some missions you are controlling an enormous number of units). However its also quite in depth in regards to bullet velocities, turrent rotation speeds, armour reflection and depths etc, lines of fire, cover etc. On top of that, you can also take direct control of any unit which is sometimes nice for a touch of arcadeyness.

I actually think its a much better strategy game than CoH. Although it does lack the aesthetics and presentation of CoH (and the less said about the speech in MoW the better), nevertheless, in terms of strategy I do actually think its a superior title.

I used to love Soldiers: Heroes of WWII, the predecessor to this game.

I played Company of Heroes but always felt it was too light, coming close to realism in some(few) areas and leaving me rather wanting. Men of War is right up my street and the multiplayer is fantastic fun tbh.

:D Typical! I bought MoW on it's own for a tenner and now I could've had them both at that price. Oh well only another 6.79 for the expansion.

I like the greater sense of scale you get with MoW over CoH. It actually feels more like you're controlling an army involved in a battle rather then just a small skirmish. I find it hard to keep up with all the micro management though but I suppose that's half the battle. I honestly can not exaggerate just how bad the voice acting is in MoW though!

Hehe, it is utterly awful :)

Thankfully its just a small part. I guess that comes from being a smaller company without big company budgets. Though having said that I think even I could have done the voice acting better :D

I hate the guy who does Alexey Kuznetsov's voice!

Didn't S:HoWWII have better voice acting? I just can't remember it being that bad. At least the gameplay more than makes up for it. Do you guys skip the cutscenes?

At times it's a frustratingly hard game but the satisfaction gained from completing a level is great :D

Yeah, I love how in the first two Russian missions you go from controlling a handful of units to like a million! I was like WTF. Managed to do it first time though, just. I play on easy though. :o

At the risk of repeating myself from previous MoW threads the immediate predecessor to Men of War was actually a virtualy unknown game called Faces of War. It is virtually the same as Men of War in that the missions are larger with you controlling many more units compared to Soldies. I've never some across anyone else who has played FoW, I only found out about it by chance myself and I'd been moaning about the lack of Soldiers sequel for years, and it had been out for ages.

I actually prefer the fewer unit approach of Soldiers as I like to take out the germans methodicaly, and you really had to be careful to keep your blokes alive. In FoW and especially MoW there is less of this as you often get liberal reinforcements if you lose anyone. Still great games though.

Actually, I think I remember you saying a while back. Unfortunately I couldn't find anywhere to buy it. Now ordered though ;)

Favourite mission was the one where you have to sneak behind German lines, plant some bombs, scout stuff out and get to the marked point. The second component of that mission is the full blown assault on the base at the top of the hill/mountain - warfare on a huge scale.

Is there much of a multiplayer community? How easy is it to get games?

I'm not a huge rts fan but this does look good. Tempted to just get the original though as I doubt I'd play it that much.

It's times like these that I miss the Sudden Strike Series. SS3 was bad but the first and its addon were immensely good! I loved those games. Wish they would make a 4th.

Thanks for the heads up on this deal fellas, purchased! :)

I was originally looking at this as enjoying Company of Heroes Anthropology & at this price its a steal!

Also looking at World in Conflict, is that worth the 20 sheets its listed at? looks good apart from the cheesy voice overs.
