Air France to charge obese passengers for two seats

I am personally in favour of it and am certain other air lines will be adopting this scheme.

A plane ticket should entitle you to 100kg including baggage and self.

220LBS is nothing.

If you're big (do weight lifting for example) that is easy to reach. I'm about that weight (under it by about 10 pounds), do weight lifting (big framed anyway) and just over 6'1. Freefaller, Tummy, Tank and others would likely be (I don't want to say are) also in the same boat of 200LBS+.

Also, what happens if you're like 7 feet tall or something? Brock Lesnar (former WWE wrestler, now in the UFC) is well over 260 - 270 LBS a lot of the time, but is 6'3. I agree if your flab is over other peoples seats that's one thing, but going the weight route is a bit dicey.

Surely that is for the airline to decide what charging structure provides the best profit/attraction approach overall?

It is indeed, but I think it would be fine if they did it by weight.. I would like to see it done.

It costs money to move weight, and therefore the more weight you have the more it should cost to travel :)

Excellent input, great work.

Presumably you're insinuating that all the skinny people will be lording it up over the fatties as another victory of the media instilled idealism of Boney = Best. I think that's what you were attempting to put across anyway...

An interesting viewpoint. I'm not skinny. Infact, I'm a touch overweight given my cmplete lack of height, but i'm not going to be able to argue with the fact that if you use two seats, it's unfair you only pay for one. It's not prejudice, it's not segregation, it's not an -ism of any kind. It's just a fact. Each seat costs X. If you use two, you pay 2*X.
People aren't arguing that. Read the thread. They're suggesting charging per kg not per size. Which is disgusting and IS prejudice.

And that wasn't the point I was getting out. But hating overweight people is like hating Microsoft. I's cool to hate.

er. 100kg including baggage? Not everyone is a skiny runt tbh. I'm 115kg and have 17% bodyfat..
Was going to say I was 110kg with low body fat.

(now have high body fat :D )

Charging for 2 seats if you take 2 seats is fine but arbitrary weight limits does not make sense

the AF system which seems to work on whether or not you can fasten the seat belt wouldn't affect many I would think

As people have said, charging the fatties 2 seats when they take up two seats is perfectly reasonable.

Charging people by weight when they take up a single seat however isn't, allot of people have no control over their weight due to height/build.

if they charge by weight I would imagine that they would leave themselves open to a sex discrimination accusations

Exactly what i was thinking..all those fatties will be up in arms about this lol.

Anyhow what also makes me wonder is how are they going to do this ie how or by what means will they charge passengers??....how do you know if someone is going to take up 2 seats etc etc...what if the said passenger has a medical condition??.....do they need to bring a doctors note to prove this??...could be open to abuse by the fatties if you think about itie all they need is a doctors note or cert to prove they are obese because of a medical condition.

Im all for this but my only concern is how are they going to regulate this.

Royal mail should charge same for shipping ANY item then. Find an average price to cover all mail from mahoosive to tiny, and charge a flat fee.

Yes I've read the thread and am aware of the Charge by Weight discussion. I don't agree with it. Use Two Seats Pay 2 Fares makes sense to me. Charging by weight is dodgy ground, in my opinion, and should be avoided. Especially, as people have pointed out, Heavy != Obese.

I don't hate fat people. I hate myself for being a bit fat, but that's not the same thing!

If anything, I've stay the same to gained *MORE* weight since working out. My frame is naturally large, so I would look so very wrong skinny.

It is also racial discrimination too, French people are generally more skinny by nature of their food being **** :p

oh and due to having to keep running up and down all those stairs to hide in the attic

and .................... :D

Then we agree. Oddly with both counts. I hate myself for being fat too! Lazy now :( But it's not all bad, I don't take up two seats!

Say what you like about the French....this is a long overdue and awesome idea. Sucks for the people who are just huge and not at all fat, but that's life.

Or.. or.. especially when some 26% of women and 38.5% of men in your native customer base are overweight, you could... wait for it.. make bigger seats. You know, like hotels buy bigger beds, instead of charging people over 6 feet for add-on to European single size. All I'm saying is - unless you're douchebag corp there is no need to go ryan air on people.

That doesn't make sense, I think he was referring too that if you make a blanket weight limit then a 6ft8 bloke is going to be screwed through no fault of his own

The key word in my post is "control".

No one has control of their build or height, why should they be put out simply by the way their genes are constructed?

Let them do it and see their business drop as people look for the alternative airlines that wont charge them extra. brilliant.
