Didn't realise there were different ones :'(

Which type do I need to connect my new 24" monitor to my ATI 4890?

There seems to be DVI, DVI a dual link and stuff.

I did search Google for it before you ask... but I am still confused.

dvi_ds.gif
DVI-D single link (Digital only i.e. Digital monitor and gfx card)

dvi_is.gif
Single link DVI-I (Digital and analogue i.e. analogue monitor and gfx card)

dvi_dd.gif
DVI-D Dual link (Digital monitor and gfx card) used for 2560x1600 or more

theres 2 other combinations not worth listing unless you have analogue monitor...
hope this helps more

What I find confusing is that a lot of monitors specs don't say whether they're -D or -I, so I can't tell what's compatible with the -I dual link outputs of my graphics card.

Edit, answer found on wikipedia!

The long flat pin on a DVI-I connector is wider than the same pin on a DVI-D connector, so it is not possible to connect a male DVI-I to a female DVI-D by removing the 4 analog pins. It is possible, however, to connect a male DVI-D cable to a female DVI-I connector. Many flat panel LCD monitors have only the DVI-D connection so that a DVI-D male to DVI-D male cable will suffice when connecting the monitor to a computer's DVI-I female connector.
