5870 finally back to launch price

the vapour X version is now only £340 which is not bad at all consdering how much a decent after market cooler would cost, need alone water cooling block for one

Now the only issue is people expected the 5870 to come back to RRP, because there was zero reason for it to ever be above that pricing. However due to the bad pricing when the 5970 was launched, they got away with overpricing it right from the off, meaning no one remembers it was supposed to be £420-450, so they seem reluctant to reduce the pricing on that.

Which is a shame, as if 5970's drop down to the £420-450 mark, it will probably help push the 5870 down in price, as at £420-450 vs 2x£300 you get vastly more value for money(but worse overclocking in general). Still at some stage the pricing makes more sense with a 5850 at £200, a 5870 at £250 and a 5970 at £450, which hopefully won't be that far away.

EDIT:- By they I don't actually mean OCUK, or not only I meant retailers in general, because the pricing on the 5850/70 was so poor all over the place when the 5970 was launched, it basically launched everywhere at the "price gouge" price, so people aren't even hugely aware its RRP is around the £430 mark.

meaning the HD5970 is still best for its money over the HD5870

I m still likely the buy the 50 anyway how cos all I have to do is overclock the nuts off it, than hay I got the same performance pretty much

The 5870 is way better bang for the buck at £300 than 5970 at £500, £500+ is a nuts price for a 5970 it needs to be £450 max to compete with 5870.

The reasons 5870 is back at launch price was due to the facts that they are more readily available and people are going for the cheaper 5850 instead. It makes more sense to lower the markup to beat competition and to free up some storage space.

They should drop a little more soon. When TSMC are hitting production targets ATI will remove the the $25 premium that was added to cover the short fall.

I'm not sure $25 would mean to retail pounds though.

How much difference is there between a 5850/5870 and Xfire 4870's? (512mb) 1680x1050 res....

Crossfire 4870s will be a bit slower than a 5870 (due to RAM restricted).

When they're not limited by RAM, they should be about 15% faster than a 5870 when crossfire is behaving.

5850 xfire would be a massive improvement then? I may wait untill they reach £180ish.

Shame I've got 512mb instead of the 1GB 4870's.

don't think they would ever go below £200 not that much blew anyway I would be surprised if they do

5870s should be 270£ tops tbh. 5850s at 180£ and 5970 for 450£.

The current prices are just silly.

Guess it'll be a month or 2 before they drop to "normal" prices.

Hmmm, compared to what we've had in the past I think £300 for the fastest single GPU card is pretty decent. Not sure about the 5970 though.

Damn straight, £300 for the fastest single GPU with no competition in sight is a good deal. If Nvidia were in this position they would be £450 and history clearly shows you this.
