Best £3.95 ever spent!

The tragic thing is that you seem to honestly believe that purely adding an extra two cylinders, turns a car from a crappy 'dagdag' into a fantastic engine, with no other factors being taken into account.

I think he's referring to it being a diesel, without discounting that 6+ pot diesels can be pretty good.

i'd take an S Class because the running costs will be roughly the same as a golf diesel.

Oh they absolutely wouldnt, they would be loads higher but thats fine as the OP reckons budget isnt a problem. Nice S Class, rather commute in that than a Golf. Only 2 years older as well.

I did 40k a year in a 2.0Tdi Mk5 golf and found it great place to be and once remapped held its own against most of the M6 crowd. 40mpg no matter how i treated it, great seats and did all i needed of it for 2 years.

Who cared that it sounded like a tractor and was not as smooth as a 6pot diesel.

I've owned great cars, pants cars and in between cars and that golf was still the best all rounder i have had.

Would have another in a heart beat.

Fox thanks for the suggestions but why would i want 6 year old cars that have been a quarter of the way to the moon?

3.0 litre plus Quattros arent exactly going to give great economy? Doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me.

Im not really sure why the sarcastic comments about budget come into it, if i say the budget doesnt matter for the right car at the right price point why can that not just be taken at face value?

Because it means you can serenely waft to work in a fantasticly built Audi A8 instead of drive in a Golf?

The Audi A8 is a better car than the Golf.

I think what people are trying to say is if budget isn't a problem get a car designed for motorway driving.
Why is mpg so important if budget isn't? What's an extra £100 per month in fuel when you're looking at spending £13k.

If budget is important buy an older car designed for motorway driving.

LOL, these threads where the OP wishes to buy a new car for a lot of money so save a bit of money are becoming too common. With that kind of logic how can you reason with someone.

Sorry, just had a bad 2 nights on night shifts stuck with a guy telling me about his bargain 13k Corsa and how it is so efficient and cheaper than his old car to run, (seems to forget the monthly finance payments).

You can't say money isn't an issue and then care about efficiency, unless you are an uber hippy and never go on holiday or have used an aeroplane and actually honestly care about Co2 it IS about money.

At the end of the day petrol is cheap compared to the depreciation on a nice new luxury car suitable for motorway driving.

Decide what you honestly really want and you will get good suggestions, it seems to be a Golf so not sure what this thread is for.

I'm actually a big fan of the Golf, but for 30k a year I'd go for a TDI A8 - you'll get there in extreme comfort and it'll do 33mpg. If you're spending £15,000 on a car, the difference between that and the Golf GT remapped to 170bhp will be about 9 mpg which is inconsequential when spending so much.

I always do that text reg check, it's bloody brilliant for the price, found out my 748 had 8 owners when the seller told me it was 3, text whilst i was there looking at it, confronted him and he lowered the price by £300 as I was about to walk away from it lol.

great, except the running costs are going to be obscene compared to a golf.

just because a person wants to buy a diesel hatchback, why should they be forced to get an 8 year old one?
If they want to get a relatively young model, why stop them?
Not everyone wants an old car.

An 8 year old one? The ones linked are 5 years old, and stretching the initial budget a little gets you a 4 year old one.

The running costs aren't obscene - and remember, the OP isn't overly concerned with budget seemingly.

In case you misread my post - I said I was a big fan of the Golf, but 30k a year in one isn't my idea of fun. The A8 was DESIGNED for this type of motoring - it is within budget, running costs aren't obscene (I know, as i've owned one) and it is perfect for the job in hand.
