LLLLLLLLOOK OUT CANADAAAA *Gay hand gesture*

couldnt I go in on a temporary work visa and then apply while there?

In a nutshell, no.

I plan to move to Canada myself in a few years. I have been to Canada on and off a lot from around 2002-2006, back then I was looking into emigration and the process back then so perhaps it has changed a bit.

It is really easy to get a 1 year work visa (something I did in 04-05), I have family over there which helps if you want to move, being in a relationship where you are not engaged/planning to get married didn't help your app back then but you say you are a skilled programmer so that surely will be your biggest help.

I did read back then that you needed at least $9000 if you move on your own without any support. You won't be eligable for there benefits so how much you bring with you is quite important when applying for just yourself with no job lined up and no family.

I was told and still am today by family there that having a job lined up in Canada can be the final say on a lot of applications. I would 100% try very hard to get a job. The hard part of it is applying whilst unable to work there, this is really hard especially with no help/friends in Canada. You would also have to go over there for an interview in many cases as some of familys, family had to do in 2006.

Its not as hard as it may seem though, just a lot of work.

Up to three years. There's a big ass queue of people in front of you, this takes time. Plus, if you application is wrong in anyway it will be sent back then resubmitted and thus, back in the queue.

This is why I hired Canada Visa to do my application (Campbell Cohen). My application took 6 months to process, mainly because everything that was required was in the application. If you are looking to make the a permanent move it could be worth paying the money. A guy from the UK at my place of work came over as a skilled worker and it took around three years.

how did you do it in 6 months? was it as a skilled worker?

Canada sucks for mobile if it hasn't changed much in the 3 years since I was last there, PAYG is much more hassle than it is in the UK and the length of time your voucher is valid for is in direct proportion to its cost usually. Oh and they even seemed to be quite a way behind on the phones you could get on contract plus the contracts were for 3 years at a time if memory serves.

As for bank accounts, I got one from the Royal Bank of Canada pretty easily, I would have had my passport at the time but as far as I recall they were happy for me to have a temporary address and use that although from memory the functionality of the account was slightly limited because of that. Another example of the oddities of Canadian services here though is that banks don't tend to open at the weekend or at least I didn't find one that did - I've discovered that in London now as well though they often don't, weirdos.

Good luck with the move, as mentioned it can take a very long time to get your visa unfortunately.

The comment about phones is certainly true.
When I first arrived out there I had a Sony Ericsson P800 which decided to die on me. So I bought a pay-as-you-go to replace it, and the best phones that Rogers Wireless sold were very basic chunky Nokia's with basic two tone colour screens. It was the kind of thing the UK had years before... but it probably is indicative of the UK culture of people constantly buying new phones.

I had a bank about with RBC as well, however most of the banks charge you for making cash withdrawls. You can also pay a fee each month, in a tier system based on how many withdrawls you think you make, and you only pay the set fee instead.

One of my Canadian friends said one of the best banks was 'President's Choice' which I believe is a Supermarket, and they don't charge for withdrawls... or didn't a few years ago.

I'd certainly think that the OP is overly optimistic about the chances of getting into Canada that quickly. I looked into staying when my one year work visa expired, and it's a very difficult country to get into. No offense to you, but a relationship that isn't very long, based around having met online will come under major scrutiny. Just for instance, have you seen any of those shows on UK immigration, you can see just how much they grill people doing similar things trying to get into this country.

A friend of mine developed a relationship with a Canadian girl during his one year Visa too. After returning to the UK, he made a number of trips back out to her, using the standard tourist (6 months) visa each time. He was eventually told off for this, and warned not to do it again, as he would likely be refused entry to the country.

Another couple I know ran a holiday/accommodation business, UK based, but they moved to Canada, so it was technically legal for them to do so. However they only had tourist visas, but their daughter was born in Canada, meaning she had dual citizenship, so their application for residency was based on that. Unfortunately though, the Canadian government didn't like that, and so they had to move back to Europe instead.

As others have pointed out, it takes years to get a Visa, so as much as you might like to see her often, your at risk by making lots of long trips without working. If you dare overstay a tourist visa you will be shooting yourself in the foot also.

Good luck though, it's such a great country.

ive been thinking about moving to north america when i get older and trained. I've got a question about canada. How much french is used? would it be worth learning if i move there?

As Spawn says unless you are in Quebec then it's not a big issue, however you get points for being able to speak French against your total so even if you never intend to use it the ability to speak it may be enough to bump you over the requisite total.

PC are just about OK. I had an account with them but closed it a few months down the line. They are cheap but don't really have a decent branch network. If all you want to do is online banking and grab a bit of cash they are ok. They don't charge for withdrawals from their own ATM's, any other ATM you will pay to use.

I think you need that amount of money for a permanent residency (could be true for a skilled worker). You will wait for three months for OHIP healthcare to kick in. I purchased a three month private plan to cover emergencies etc. You will still have to pay for dental and prescriptions unless you have a private plan, provincial plans won't generally cover anything but the basics. You cannot collect any form of benefits for three years.

We are currently going through the visa application process for permanent residency to British Columbia (Ideally heading for Vancouver). If you are not on 'the list' of 38 jobs, it is very hard to emigrate to Canada. You can get through the Provincial Sponsorship route, but that does involve getting sponsorship from a job in Canada, which a lot of emplyers may be reluctant to do as it is a lenghty process for them. The list of 38 jobs are;

0111: Financial Managers
0213: Computer and Information Systems Managers
0311: Managers in Health Care
0631: Restaurant and Food Service Managers
0632: Accommodation Service Managers
0711: Construction Managers
1111: Financial Auditors and Accountants
2113: Geologists, Geochemists and Geophysicists
2143: Mining Engineers
2144: Geological Engineers
2145: Petroleum Engineers
3111: Specialist Physicians
3112: General Practitioners and Family Physicians
3141: Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists
3143: Occupational Therapists
3142: Physiotherapists
3151: Head Nurses and Supervisors
3152: Registered Nurses
3215: Medical Radiation Technologists
3233: Licensed Practical Nurses
4121: University Professors
4131: College and Other Vocational Instructors
6241: Chefs
6242: Cooks
7213: Contractors and Supervisors, Pipefitting Trades
7215: Contractors and Supervisors, Carpentry Trades
7217: Contractors and Supervisors, Heavy Construction Equipment Crews
7241: Electricians (Except Industrial and Power System)
7242: Industrial Electricians
7251: Plumbers
7252: Steamfitters, Pipe fitters and Sprinkler System Installers
7265: Welders and Related Machine Operators
7312: Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics
7371: Crane Operators
7372: Drillers and Blasters – Surface Mining, Quarrying and Construction
8221: Supervisors, Mining and Quarrying
8222: Supervisors, Oil and Gas Drilling and Service
9212: Supervisors, Petroleum, Gas and Chemical Processing and Utilities

Each NOC code has very specific requirements, so even if you fall close to one of the jobs it might not be plain sailing. I am trying to get in as '4131: College and Other Vocational Instructors', but as my job covers several NOC codes, I would say my chances are 50/50. No other way than prepare as much evidence as possible, spend the £750 or so for the application and hope for the best.

Edit; A good website for information is http://britishexpats.com/forum/

Me = Canadian citizen:D:D...so yeh i dont have to worry about some namby pamby application to get permanent residence there:D...

I could, just like my brother who 6 yrs left the UK and settled down there without them batting an eyelid, do the same but at the moment currently fixing my house then planning to put it up for sale in the next yr or so...then hopefully get as much money as i can..pay off my mortgage and go to Canada...where i already have a 5 bedroom house that i had built for me 2 yrs ago...currently my brother and kids live there.

Be careful on that website, ask the wrong question and you get shouted at; some of the members are a bit twitchy...

I'd love to emigrate one day, lucky OP.

Hehe, yeah I noticed some of them are a bit angry, lol. Has a vast amount of information on there though.
