Turn-by-turn GPS navigation now free on Nokia Symbian phones

I think the N82 is on. Currently installing now. This will be my last Nokia phone, Symbian and Nokia just doesn't cut it anymore. The Maps application didn't even work since I got this phone

Mike - only briefly looked into it but it seems the only way to avoid the problem I stated above is this:

1. Delete cities folder and qf file from your memory card
2. Factory reset the phone with *#7370#
3. Disable any power savers like screen savers, etc
4. Now use nokia maps updater to update to v3.0
5. Run nokia maps 3 first on the phone
6. Connect to your PC using PC suite mode and transfer maps.

Just tried and it worked. Don't forget to backup :)

EDIT - I thought this was free. Just opened and it said something about a 90 day license?
Thanks very much for trying, I think you may have the non-free version by the sounds of it! :(

I don't really want to format right now, as I've got loads of stuff on there, but I think I'm going to start backing it all up anyway.
Check this site to see what Nokia phones can currently get the free navigation.

On my Nokia 5800 I have done this:

1.Update Ovi maps using Software updater (On the Phone)
2.Installed Nokia PC suite
3.Installed Nokia Map Loader ( Didnt work for me on 64bit Windows 7,Installed but kept crashing)
Well, N82 is not on that list, so I guess I'm going to stick with my Navman GPS for now.

It's a start tho, and with any luck they'll add the older phones with GPS receivers in. :)

Someone told my Garmin and Tom Tom shares have gone down because of this is free, crazy stuff...

Will I need this with my E72 thats due to arrive shortly? I thought it had all this anyway?

Your E72 should come with Ovi Maps pre-installed. You might have to update it to receive the free turn-by-turn navigation though.

Just to clear up...

Ovi Maps (for Google Maps-type functionality) = free and always has been.
Turn-by-turn nagivation on Ovi Maps = used to be a subscription service but it's now free.

For all phones?

Yep for all Nokia phones.. However only 10 Nokia phones are officially supported. Support for other phones will follow.

The initial list of compatible Nokia devices includes: the Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic and Nokia X6.

Further devices will follow over the next few weeks and months, following testing and customisation. (In particular, the Nokia N97 isn't supported because the Maps 3.3 installer needs (in the order of) 20MB free disk space on C: and this would present problems for many users - a workaround is apparently coming in a week or so, possibly in the form of building Maps 3.3 into the firmware itself, eliminating the need for a separate download)

Nokia bought Navteq for $8.1bn. And now they have been forced by google to give the software away on phones.

Ouch.

Hmm looks like the N97 (Full fat) will get it as part of the v21 firmware on the 28th, now all I need to do is get my phone to a nokia cre point before then and have the gps antenna upgrade and replacement lens cover assembly.

I still don't buy that Google has forced Nokia's hand. Remember that Google relies on TeleAtlas for its maps outside of the US and that TeleAtlas won't allow Google to offer free turn-by-turn navigation using their maps. Google would need to develop its own maps to compete with Nokia's offering. That's a very expensive undertaking.

This is obviously a move that will sell more phones though.

Took me 4 clicks and about 4 minutes to DL this Ovi Maps upgrade to my E72. Have used in both UK and US already. It's pretty sweet.
Here's a link to see if your device is ready to go. http://maps.nokia.com/explore-services/ovi-maps
Full disclosure - I work with Nokia marketing team. But this is big, even I didn't. My Yank kids like the talking voice directions in the English accent ; >

Hey, do you know if the N900 will be getting this? Im thinking it could be a while if at all..

Can someone please clarify the various types of GPS on my N82? Whilst using these free maps, my phone has assisted, internal and network GPS enabled. Is there any charge? I also have unlimited web bolt on if that helps.

Internal uses the GPS device. Network uses the cell tower to get an approximate location.

Assisted GPS uses the cell tower to get an approximate location and then downloads(using the internet) the locations of the gps satellites getting a quicker lock than internal would on its own.

If your phone is not listed.. pick a phone that runs the same platform..

The 5530 doesn't have an internal GPS, but I have a bluetooth one. I can't find an option to search for it - anyone know how?
