I cannot believe how vague Nvidia are being!!

I have saved up £700 and thinking of gettin 2x 5870's in CF instead.

The dosh was going to be for Fermi but with all this "NVagueness" after the Fermi NDA had ended and the possibility it will not be released to the public til late March\April 2010 I am paranoid its gonna be another FX5800 nightmare!

Just wish we knew more re - benchmarks!

Surely 2x 5870's in CF will be a beast for AVP & Dirt II & pretty future proof ??

i would wait a while and see what comes of them if i were you mate, nothing worse than spending money on a upgrade only to wish you had waited

Have a look at this thread.

Your not paranoid. Something is not right with Fermi IMO.

Someone from Nvidia said they would be looking at releasing fermi towards the end of Q1, April the 26th is what Nvidia consider Q1.

The GF 100 is said to be pulling 280 watt + so you would need a VERY powerful PSU, and water cooling could be a necessity just to keep temps under control.

From the early benchmarks it seems a single gt380 could beat a dual GPU 5790.

I think you might have read one too many articles on "semiaccurate".

From what I've heard it's power requirements will be in the 180-200W bracket (and that's for the TESLA model).

There has been plenty of rumor that the GF100 will be twice as fast as the GTX285.

Personally I think the FERMI based cards will be worth the wait. And I'd advise not listening to the ATI fanbois too much.

I would have a read at a review on guru3d on fermi. Gives you a much better idea about fermi and it has some damn nice features.

personally. i would wait and see what happens. Should fermi turn out to be bad (which i highly doubt) at least the prices of the ATI cards will have dropped

There's a decent amount of truth in that TBH. Although if the Fermi cards turn out naff, why would ATI need to drop their prices.

Excluding laptops ive nearly always had a nvidia card, but if the Fermi isn't any good, my next card may well be an ATI/AMD.

ATi may not need to drop their prices, as if Fermi comes out at £500, then i can't see ATi dropping the 5870 down from £300, not when they'll be £200 cheaper.

With a core that large and complicated, I doubt it coming in at under 200 watts any time soon.

5970 was another choice but then I read about the VRM issues with them when oc'd which wont help me as I am addicted to overclocking and they are incredibly difficult to find in stock.

Ok, just get one 5870 - (I would get the Vapor X version)
It will have all the power you need and you can always sell it for a good price if you want to upgrade to the 5000 series refresh or fermi at a later date.

I see little point in waiting, and I suspect the people recommending it just want you to go Nvidia no matter what, and it's laughable to think that 'Fermi' will be the cause of lower prices! That's something Nvidia won't be able to compete on, especially with VERY little availability for a few months and price gouging.

Source? All I have seen states 280W which is why it has an 8 pin as well as a 6 pin power connector.

If only 180W to 200W like you say then they would have just put two 6 pin power connectors on them surely?

Denial, its a funny thing.

If Fermi realy is worth the wait then where are the benchmark and whords of exciting information that should have appeared when the NDA ended?

Well l can't see Fermi having a huge impact on ATI pricing. The 380GTX model hopefully will be quite a bit faster than the 5870 but it will cost quite a bit more so for the performance you are getting the 5870 pricing will be logical. Now if the 380GTX trades blows with the 5970 then l can see ATI reducing the price of that particular card.

For ATI to drop the price of the 5870 it needs a 360GTX that will perform better and not cost a lot more than the 5870.

Personally l would wait until March/early April to see what Nvidia is bringing to the table. If it doesn't suit your needs then go for the 5870's.
