I've had my 1st Gen 15" Macbook pro since late 2006 and it just won't die!
It's the Core Duo 2Ghz one. I upgraded the RAM to 2Gb when i bought it (cost £160 at the time  ) and swapped out the 100Gb Hard drive for a 250Gb one in Jan 2008. The battery is perfect as I got it replaced for free a bit before my AppleCare ran out.
It still performs pretty well too, albeight with a few dents in the case. I pretty much only use it for Web Browsing, music and the odd bit of photo editing. The scrolling on web pages is a bit stuttery if you scroll fast and it beach balls quite a bit but its perfectly fine for my needs.

The problem is that every time I go into the Apple store I see the sexy 13" Unibody Macbook pros but I can't justify a new one as this one still runs fine.

Basically I need an excuse to upgrade, help me OcUK!
I think the solution may be to get one of these fancy Apple Tablets if they ever actually release them!

Keep an eye out Wednesday 5pm for an announcement. :)

Personally, I try to upgrade my computer/laptop every three years. Keeps things sensible without getting too out of date, and also gives me time to save for the new one. Since you've had yours since late 2006 (Probably October refresh?), that's 3 years 4 months.

Time for a new one methinks! :D

Leave it in direct sunlight until it turns yellow. Knowing the vain bunch that you are (macbook users ;-)), you won't be able to take it out anymore.

It's made of aluminium ;) :p

Lol, sounds like the thing just doesn't want to die.

How about selling it on? You may as well sell it now, as there's a good market for them and it's still fully working, so you'll get a good chunk of the cost of a brand new model.

Is this helping? :p

Believe it or not I think I prefer the look of the pre-unibody MBP 15's. I was looking for one a while back and couldn't find a decent one that wasn't silly money. I recently found a good uMBP 13 and got it for the same kind of price that some of the earlier alu 15's were selling for (I'm sure I'll want to upgrade again when an announcement is mde on Weds though).

So you should look at selling it while it still works and it's still worth reasonable money.

They are lovely machines.

My original macbook pro is still functional, slow running aperture these days and for that alone I'll be upgrading when the new ones turn up (I'm really not convinced it'll be at the event next week though, we'll see). It's much the same, core duo 2.16Ghz (so the higher spec model!)

Haha..

My Macbook is still plodding along after 3.5 years of abuse.

Battery has been replaced a few times and is the current one is close to 1000 cycles (sounds ludicrous..), it's covered in tape holding bits of the case together.

I think the poor thing is hanging on by a thread, but I like it too much to replace it just yet. It does everything I need right now, and being in this state means I don't have to care about pampering it, which is convenient as it goes everywhere with me - just sling it in a backpack and off I go...

It's died?! Just started using it today and OS X thinks that the trackpad button is being clicked all the time. I've had to connect an external mouse to use it. Think it will need a new trackpad assembly.

A classic case of tempting fate!

I had the same thing happen to me on a Acer netbook and the fix was to simply reconect the trackpad to the motherboard.

I cycle my Macbook every 2 years, I'll be buying a new one at the end of this year with 3 years Applecover then sell that after 2 years with a years Applecover remaining. I think this works very well as the Macbook gets a very good price with a years cover left.
