after some freeware to compress a 3.6gig file to 700mb

Hi don't know much about compressing files i want to compress my ps3 back-up from my usb stick to a 700mb CD so if i ever need it in the future i can just unzip it and put it back on the usb stick.
 
Depending on the data contained you can expect 40-45% compression at the best so it would never fit.

As said, burn to dvd.
 
There may be some extreme compression software out there but they're generally not too reliable and take ages to do. You could try 7zip/Winrar but its not likely to comrpess that much. Stick to DVDs.
 
Dual-Layer discs?

edit: ignore, just realised you said 3.6gb file, anything over 4.6gb you could use dual-layer

Standard way to compress it on the Linux side of the house would be to tar it then gzip it. In your case selecting the highest compression (probably the slowest too :D) algorithm. Compression works best on files with lots of repeating elements, and to be honest that's probably not the case for you.

If you on Wincrap then perhaps consider rar'ing it with winrar

There are considerably better algorithms than those winrar uses but you'd be waiting about a year to compress a 3.6gb file. :p
