Stuck on 3.8Ghz - help overclocking X2 550

Hi guys,

I have a phenom II x2 550 (unlocked to 3 cores) which I am trying to overclock. I am pretty new to overclocking so I have just been following the tutorials and trying various settings to see what I can get. But am stuck at 3.8Ghz even though the temps seem fine (I estimate around 40-45 under stress).

Not sure what to try next. The odd thing is that upping the vcore only seems to make it worse. I can generally boot into windows at 3.9ghz or more but it crashes as soon as I start prime95 so I try changing the vcore from auto to manual and increasing it but then it wont even boot until I have increased it to around 1.5v.

Here are some pictures of my settings. Anyone got any suggestions?

pass prime
fail
fail
fail

Not sure if I am correct to be using the multiplier as the main way of overclocking, any help/advice would be amazing. I would love to break 4.0ghz, I seem to be so close.... ;)

hmmm ive hit a wall at 3.7 and have cant unlock any of the extra cores so ur not doin bad... have you tried leavin the multiplier at 15.5 and upping the clock freq. first then when it becomes unstable, drop the cpu clock slightly, increase the multi and maybe increase v core slightly.

I've also only managed to only unlock my 3rd core (4th core appears defective no matter what I try) and can only get to 3.8GHz. Anything over this is unstable but if I disable the 3rd core I can get up to 3.9GHz with a small voltage increase (have not tried 4GHz yet).

I am on the same Phenom II X2 550BE. I used a combination of increasing the multiplyer and voltage but cannot get a stable 3.9GHz with 3rd core unclocked. I am not bothered though. Going from a 3.1GHz 2 core CPU to a 3 core running at 3.6GHz without touching the voltage is good enough for me.

You may find this info here useful.

I will try what you say. Thanks for the advice.

Your temp estimations are wrong and your proc is too hot.

Really? I ran prime on looking at the temps on 2 core to compare the actual core temp and the one I use for estimations and the actual core temp was always 5-7 lower than the estimation one. The max temp of the processor is 70 so unless activating the 3rd core has increased core temps by 30 degrees without affecting the estimation temp I cant see how it could be too hot... But I am no expert so I guess it might well be true if you say so.

Thanks. I agree 3.8 is great its just that 4 seems so close and tempting! I will have a look at that link.

Has anyone tried playing with the LoadLine Calibration? Not sure what it does, supposed to just 'affect stability'.

neither works for me. Just get 0 on everything. Is there anything special you have to do to get them to work?

Everest still gives me my overall CPU temp when I unlock the 3rd core. Nothing special required. Version 5.3.1900

BTW, I just tried doing 4GHz just with multiplyer and increasing voltage, it doesnt work even if I disable the 3rd unlocked core. It just blue screens 10 secs into booting Windows.

hmm odd. I have the same version and I cant see an overall cpu temp. Are you going computer and then sensor? I see the motherboard then each of the cpu cores (all at 0) and then Aux (which is the one i am using to estimate my cpu temp and I think is another mobo one). Then each of my hdd.

Yes, that is how I am doing it.

I know some people are able to see temps of TMPIN01,02,03 etc... Using another application which states temps, I cannot remember which one it is now :(

Yes I can see TMPIN1 and TMPIN0 but aren't those mobo temps not core ones?

This is all I can see (hwmonitor, speedfan and everest) - pic.

I guess I am stuck using TMPIN0 and adding 5 for safety (in my testing the actual core temp was always about 5 below so 10 deg safety margin).

unlocking it doesnt mean youll have a stable cpu. they are not meant to be unlcoked.

True :( but I primed it at 3.8 so was hoping I could get a bit more out of it. Will just have to see....

Anyone got any ideas about this loadline calibration thing or any of the other settings that are still on auto? I dont know what most of them are:o

Stuck.

Cant really get any higher. Thought I had cracked it at 3.9 last night but it failed prime overnight. Oh well, cant really complain! :D

Thanks a lot for all the help everyone, really appreciated.

set your loadline to 19% and see if it helps.

I will give it a go. Thanks.

My current set up is to have the multiplier upping me to 3.8ghz (which is totally stable on stock voltage) and then increasing the clock one at a time whenever I have time to do a prime. (only on 201 so far and that seems stable!).

What actually is the loadline?
