A seven-year-old boy from west London has raised more than £65,000 for the Haiti earthquake relief effort by organising a charity cycle ride.

Charlie Simpson, from Fulham, cycled five miles (8km) around South Park near his home to raise funds for Unicef's earthquake appeal.

The fundraising total outstripped his initial £500 goal, after he put an appeal on the JustGiving website.

Unicef thanked him "on behalf of the many children in Haiti".

On his JustGiving page, Charlie said: "I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives.

"I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti."

Unicef is helping to provide water, sanitation, education and nutrition, as well as supporting child protection.

Money raised by Charlie will go towards its Haiti Earthquake Children's Appeal.

David Bull, Unicef's UK executive director, said: "This is a very bold and innovative gesture by Charlie that shows he connects with and not only understands what children his own age must be going through in Haiti, but is also wise enough to know that he can help them.

"The little seed - his idea - that he has planted has grown rapidly and his is a place well-deserved in the humanitarian world.

"On behalf on the many children in Haiti, I thank Charlie for his effort."

Not bad for a £500 target!

Get giving people..

How about no?

Ok, don't

It's a small child attempting to do something for people less well off, I don't particularly believe in charity myself, it has many many flaws in most cases, but this is undoubtably a good cause with the bonus of making the kid pleased with himself..

Why take great pride in telling us you refuse to give anything?

Because it's all we've heard every day for the past 12 days, and it's getting a little tired now.

And a please would've been nice.

Well hundreds of people are dying in Haiti at this very moment. You should be aware of it.

If you want to live in blissful ignorance that's your issue. Don't enter the thread in the first place?

Fine, I will. I simply said what I thought, great on the kid it's truly a touching story, but I just don't like being bombarded with "GIVE" everwhere I look.

I'll leave the thread to prevent more upset.

So you want other people to shut up? Believe or not, other people care. How about gouge out your eyes, stop watching TV, going on the internet or stop generally talking to people.

Well when you're in a bad situation I hope that no one helps you. If you do not wish to give money then fine, but you don't have to put down other people's efforts.

Wow you're a huge douchebag...

I'd go as far as saying you're the Ultimate Douchebag...

Hmm, reading back, what caused such a backlash? Was it the wording of what I wrote?

Looking back it did sound a little uncaring (Unintentionally).

Meh, made a donation anyway.

You basically declared the fact that you don't care about the tens of thousands of people who died simply because "It's all people are talking about". Quite rightly people are calling you out on it.

Anyway, for an estimate of £500 I imagine the kid is quite pleased with himself :P

your post gave the impression that you were sick of hearing about Haiti and the plight of it's people

hopefully that was not what you really meant :)

Leave the thread, you're not wanted.

Did I really now? When did I say I don't care? Of course I bloody care, I'm a human.

Same to you Rotty, reading back it was a very harsh post. I still stand by a principal of what it sounded like in my head but I couldn't get it into words that would be understood by the forum. unfortunately my attempt of wording it came out to make me sound like an uncaring tool.
