crossfire is overkill for that res

Even in full DX11, Maxed settings? or maybe a better question is will one cope at that res? and how will it be in 12 months time?

I would get this motherboard instead:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-366-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

I would also stick to one HD5770 ATM. You can add another one at a later date if the need arises.

I'm only going for the Gigabyte board purly for USB3 and SATA 6GB tech, I'm kinda future proofing so I'm not left thinking I wish I had that in 9 months when I can't afford a new board, the reason I want to go crossfire is so I have 2GB of video memory as opposed to the 1GB I'd get going 5850, there's bound to be a benefit there down the line. The other is the Vapor X cooler, which I hear good things about, shame there aint a VX 5850.

Recommended Frostbite PC Specifications for BFBC2 & BF1943
Processor: Quadcore
Main memory: 2GB
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 260
Graphics memory: 512MB

OS: Windows Vista or Windows 7
Free HDD space: 15GB for Digital Version, 10GB for Disc Version (BFBC2)
10GB for Digital Version, 4GB for Disc Version (BF1943)

pretty much the equiv of that is a single 5770 and the reccomendation will be based on a high res because most people game at around 1900x these days. a single 5770 should give you really nice performance at the res you are planning for with all settings maxed , full aa/af

i'd drop a card and get an i5 750 intel build or a phenom2 955/965

The spec seems fishy, how many GTX260 512MB's are there, surly it should be 896MB? and no ATi reference or CPU core clocks, also them specs are for DX10 I assume.

on teh official site they have the ati equiv for some reason all the gaming sites are only listing the nvidia one....

Graphics card: GeForce GTX 260/ ATI Radeon 4870
Graphics memory: 512MB

minimum is Processor: Core 2 Duo @ 2.0GHz
Main memory: 2GB
Graphics card: GeForce 7800 GT / ATI X1900
Graphics memory: 256MB

Fair enough but none of the above are DX11 capable, as BF:BC2 is set to support DX11, what will be "reccommended" card to support it?, My gut feeling will be 5850 or 2x5770, I can't see one cutting it.

at his low res it will it depends how much dx11 they use anyway i doubt it will be much seeing as its mainly a console game anyway or we would have 64+ player maps like bf2 did:mad:

Crossfire doesn't actually give you access to 2GB of video memory, textures etc.. are copied to both cards, so you still only have an effective 1GB.

By the time you do need a 2nd card, it might be cheaper to sell your current one and get the next tech. It'll certainly be cheaper than buying 2 now....

I'd spend the money towards a better monitor first.

Thanks for your views guys gives me something to ponder.

Been having a search and from this http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5770-review-test/14 it seems one card on FryCry 2 on max settings @ 1280*1024 similar to 1360*768 only gets 46FPS, where as crossfire gets 83FPS, also in a better spec rig than I antisipate getting and that being on DX10. I don't think one card alone will satisfy my needs.
(hope this link's ok)

weird_dave, I already have a 22" 1680*1050 but I prefer using my 32"HDTV as my monitor and to replace that with a 1080p 32" will set me back in the region of £350, which is out the question. Thank you for the info on the 2GB of video memory, if thats the case then maybe the 5850's are worth looking into.

So many variables..............

Just because they are not DX11 available doesnt mean that they dont have great peformance at dx10. The new battlefield will more then likely still support dx9 due to its release on console aswell.

Even single 5770 is overkill for that res : ).
You might also consider getting the 550BE for gaming, it's more than enough really and if you get lucky you might unlock full 945BE quad out of it.

Get the patriot memory with c7 timings.
You could save few quid on a mobo as well but I'd keep this one too as well in case you wanna upgrade CPU somewhere in the future.

So yeh, swap the ram, get the cheaper CPU, single 5770 and if you can afford buy an SSD drive and get decent cooling like tuniq tower 120 EX or the corsair h50.

Could do with a monitor upgrade as well : ).

but its also with 8x aa and 16xaf and they are probably using one of the more demanding areas of the game for the benchmark.

you can always add a second card later if you feel the need anyway

I'd drop the card down to a 5770, the 5850 is overkill for that res. It will be good though if you do eventually move up to a bigger monitor, 1920*1200 resolution. But then you could always add in another 5770.

Well I have the spec in my sig below. I game at 1440x900 and can play Borderlands, Dirt 2, Fallout 3 all maxxed out with a single ATi 5770 at stock so I think you'll be fine playing at that resolution. The only time it's really going to show any slowdown is if you upgrade your monitor and start gaming at much higher resolutions.

If you upgrade your monitor, and the card doesn't meet your needs, just stick another one in and use Crossfire. Would probably work out cheaper :)

Right last toss up between these two,

or

opinions please.

Both motherboards are DDR2. The first list is a better bet if you intend to go Crossfire at some point and overclock the X3 720 as the motherboards would be better suited for this as it has a beefier VRM and better cooing.

If you are keeping the processor at stock and not doing much overclocking get the components in the second list. The motherboard can not do symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X like the one in the first list.
