Suggestions for first car

One of my mates is just about to sit his test and looking to get a first car. He's 21, so insurance shouldn't be too much. Budget around £1500 (willing to guy a bit more).

I've reccomended a focus, 1.8 or 2.0 zetec or better. He wants it to look pretty decent and have a bit of poke.

Anything else we can suggest?

Classic Mini is great fun - finding one in the budget will be hard though.
Focus 1.8 is a good idea - 2 litre is probs pushing it for a 1st car.
Citroen C2 / Saxo maybe? Both good cars - C2 is in insurance group 1/2 depeding on engine size so could save money on inusurance and buy a newer better car :)
 
Anything he gets will feel fast. It doesn't need to be particularly fast in real terms as he won't know any different.

Something smaller engined to get his NCB up for a couple of years, then move onto to something nicer. Less chance of him wrapping it round a tree (but of course he won't, because like all first time drivers he's slow, safe and responsible :rolleyes: )

1.4 Fiesta/Corsa. He can put a stupid bodykit on it if he wants it to look nice.
 
I'd look at a 1.6 VCT focus if you want something with a bit of extra poke.

2.0 will cost loads to insure for a 21 year old and is crap on the fuel.

edit:: just reread the first post and saw £1500 budget, my bad. But still, stay away from the 2 litre.

1.6 Fiat Stilo 3 Door. One of the best looking hatchbacks out there and you can pick them up for around £1500 easily.

They have sporty engines that rev high and the 0-60 times are about a second faster than the focus's with 1.6 engines.

I have one myself and I regularly beat everything Ford off the lights. I'd know living about 10mins from the Dagenham Ford factory.

The insurance group is only 5 as well + i usually get 35mpg on average.
 
I cant stand it when people say "my car beats xxxxx" - how do you even know they're trying ffs? Also an annoying habbit on public roads when most people just want to get to where they're going, not be raced and cut up by some moron in a baseball cap

I'm a 'Fiat Fanboy' ((c) Fox 2010) but could not recommend a Stilo over the other alternatives in this price range. Infact I don't think there is a price range I could recommend a Stilo.

Are you sure that these fords are actually racing you off the lights?
 
Unless you make eye contact with your rival at the lights, give them a slight nod then rev your engine (in that order) it can't be described as a race.

Oh and you have to be wearing a cap.

Stop it, my sides hurt too much. A 1.6 4 cylinder engine is sporty ? jesus where did you get them rose tinted spectacles

Now thats just not even funny. Thats just trolling. Mondeo ST220, Ford Focus RS, Ford Focus ST, Ford Focus ST170, Ford Racing Puma, Ford Mondeo ST24, Ford Mondeo 3.0 Ghia X, Ford Escort RS Turbo, Ford Escort Cosworth, Ford Escort RS2000 .. are just some of many fords that are faster. Dont talk ****

Those fall into the "much faster" category.

Hell, even my distinctly dull diesel mondeo would kick it's arse off the lights, if I was childish enough to entertain him.
