War Memorials

Biohazard, while I may not have my facts perfect - my point is that WWI was a huge messy clash between lots of countries who were all in tension with each other. One 'little' thing (the Archduke being shot) set off a chain reaction which let all these countries go "Yeeaaahhh! FIGHT!"

And so they did. With a LOT of death and destruction without an obvious 'bad guy' as in the 2nd World War with Hitler & the Nazis. A lot of blood and bodies.

It was the Great War, as you say, a war to end all wars. Sadly, it didn't. The League of Nations created afterwards to keep the peace failed miserably. Even now the UN fails to stop countries declaring war.

I can't see how WWI is any less political and dubious than more recent wars - it was truly awful, but it was also politically all over the shop - we just weren't around then to get all the news and updates and understand the situation then...

The soldiers don't, government does. The reasons are wrong and injust, possibly illegal and I don't want the genuine reasons for previous conflicts (our real survival, not WMD lies) to be trampled on.

I would be more than happy for memories for our brave to go up, but keep it seperate from the genuine wars of survival.

This makes no sense at all to me. Firstly, the reasons don't matter one bit to the approach and bravery of the service men and women, and secondly the 'War To End All Wars' was dubious in nature to say the least, and didn't end all wars. Though it should have.

The assassination was the catalyst, not the reason per se. I'm not sure why you keep on at this, or how it was dubious - clarify?

Our current and recent conflicts are not a necessity of survival as the politicians would like us to believe, but morally wrong invasions of foreign soverign countries that pose little to no threat to UK soil.
