totally at a loss with this

still won't need 850W unless your planning on running 3 5870's!!!
go corsair 750W, that will run 2 5870's if you decide to go for another!

I have two things to say . . .

  1. Corsair make surprisingly good PSU's for a Memory Manufacturer!
  2. PSU's are not always *efficient* unless running at a certain % load, i.e if you have an 850W PSU and your max load is burning just 250watts it's losing efficiency

That is because they don't make the PSUs themselves!! :p

Corsair tends to use Seasonic and CWT as their OEMs.

I would still go for the Antec Signature 650W as it is made by Delta Electronics.

CAT, stop being such a know-it-all! :p

I'm the only one allowed to do that! . . . I'm not sure if you are trying to teach me something or you informing the rest of the group! ;)

If you want to have a geek battle your on! :o

I forgot to add a :p

The previous post has been edited accordingly.

I think you are quite a knowledgeable chap Big.Wayne! :)

I am surprised though that many people are talking about the brands of PSU and not the OEMs who make them.

Sometimes even relatively cheap PSUs can be made by a good OEM and they can be a good bargain.

Do you understand the difference between a Nerd and a Geek? :D

Nrd?? :p

N-E-R-D!

I will be worried if you know which brand capacitors are inside the PSU, who manufactures the fan motor and what it's min/max fan rpms are along with CFM and average dB :p

Since I already know some things about electronics I do know about capacitor brands. The cheapo caps are among the main reasons some PSUs don't last as long since they start leaking prematurely or explode. They also have lower stability at higher temperature too which does not help if you have hot running components. This is why I tend to go by the OEM not the brand as some companies mix units made by better companies with units made by companies which are not as good.

For example the OCZ StealthXStream 400W is made by CWT and is a better unit than the 500W and 600W versions which are made by FSP. FSP makes some decent units and also some not so great units.

Corsair which mixes Seasonic and CWT made units. Some relatively unknown companies like Silverpower have some of their units made by Seasonic. Some Antec units are made by Delta Electronics. Seasonic and Delta Electronics are probably among the best OEMs out there.

TBH,if you read a PSU review by Jonnyguru or Hardware Secrets it is not hard to pick up what brands and models you should avoid.

I don't know about fans but then noise is a subjective thing.
