BMW 740Li - £2500.. Worth a punt?

Running an E38 as a daily driver, I can echo the sentiments around the costs etc. I am currently playing the fun game of 'replace-the-bits-of-front-suspension'. The running costs are high, I will have spent a grand by April in the 18 months I had it. Add in the petrol, oh my god the petrol, and yes it's an expensive motor to run.

In return, you get an amazing car on the motorway - so smoth, so unhurried and such a nice place to be that traffic jams seem almost like a good idea. The autobox is smooth as silk, even after 135k on mine. One problem I have found; driving other cars gives you a headache, that's how quiet it is inside. £ for £, you get a hell of a lot of car.

Stop it! Your not helping me resist getting another one! - Another thing that always impressed me about my e38 was that unlike just about any other car I've driven, it still felt substantial when jumping into in straight after 10 hours driving an HGV, most cars feel like they are made out of Lego by comparison to that! :D

As a punt i think these are excellent, possibly one of if not THE best value for money cars on the market. But i do think they need to be cheap, otherwise there are better options out there.

I will warn that it will likely descend into a cat and mouse game of repairs where the repairs are always worth doing, but come along fairly often. It will be all too easy to fall into the trap of never getting rid of it because "what else can go wrong now - ive fixed it all". It is not as simple as getting rid when a big bill comes along.

Provided you can live with that, or will be sensible enough to ditch it if it does get relentless, do it.

My only other thought given you mention a £5000 budget would be an S-Class which are becoming disgustingly cheap now, IMO BMW are far from the best solution here so the decision has to be financial. I would perhaps be considering stretching the budget a bit and going for an S430/500 instead which nowadays is actually doable for the budget mentioned. That said it will likely land you in a more expensive cat&mouse repair game than the 7 as its a more complicated car with a less forgiving parts catalogue.

Sorry, I didn't realize there wasn't an email contact link for forum members.

So here's my phone number: 01928-710193.

Oh, and anyone thinking of getting an E38? Now they've turned the analogue signal off, a replacement digital/hybrid module will be required for the telly to work :( Ahh, I miss 'Corrie' on the move :D

haha spot the member on detailing world

The "eat your dinner off them" clean wheel arches, the stripes wet vac'd into the mats, the immaculately clean engine bay.

He could have really looked after the car, but then he could have done what most others do and pay £500 to get it detailed ;) Explains the obviously machine polished paintwork too. Bet it wont have looked like that all its life lol.

No, I don't do that...and I resent the suggestion.

If you know of a 'detailer' that will do this for me for £500 please let me know as I'd like to engage their services:

Before:

http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/gallery/index.php?spgmGal=cc_before

During:

http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/gallery/index.php?spgmGal=cc_during

After:

http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/gallery/index.php?spgmGal=m535

When I can't do all the work myself...I pay...and not £500. Even at my very reasonably priced bodyshop (and on a car that already 'looked' very good and had already had £25K worth of supporting bills...BEFORE being bought for £25K) this car had a further £13K spent on it in bodywork:

http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/gallery/index.php?spgmGal=Mercedes_Pagoda

Please do let me know where these £500 detailers are that will do this for me because it'll take an awful lot of the effort and financial pressure off me!

In fact, since you think it's so easy and obviously have the contacts and smart insight to do it so cheaply and easily I'm surprised you're not already do it yourself?

Kind regards

Derin

Hello

Ive always been a bit of a dreamer (there fox, i said it) but have always hankered after a B3 3.0. What puts me off is they are all switchtronic. But I saw the one you sold...which was a manual, and fell in love. One of these will definetly be my next car in a few years time, its just a case of putting up with a LHD car in a RHD car country, and insane alpina insurance now!

The B3 was sold several years ago now and apparently now resides in Slovenia.
Manual E36 B3s are extremely rare.
Such an Alpina shouldn't be horrendous to insure though as they would be eligible for classic car insurance.
LHD in the U.K isn't as difficult as some think. In some ways it's better as so many people drive too close to the crown of the road so in a LHD car you can see up the inside of them to pick your overtaking point quite easily.

derin, welcome to the forum :) Great to see you posting here. I've always been a huge fan of the work you do.

Please get some pics of your E39 up, though!

Out of interest what sort of money do you sell these cars for? Lets by hypthetical - youve picked up a 1999 528i Sport and given it your usual ridiculously high levels of attention to detail. Its got, I dunno, 100k on it.

How much is it?

Pics of the 540 would be great. To say I am a massive E39 fan would be an understatement. I thought I had a clean one, its nothing compared to yours!

I'll send you details of the 540i Touring when I dig them out. It was really my 'daily driver' car but I was ony the second owner and the car had been spec'd with £16K worth of optional extras from new! (double glazing etc)

But the bottom line I guess is I don't make a profit or my living on these cars. It's just a hobby for me.

Sometimes they might seem 'expensive'...but there are always 'know alls' who 'think' they can do it cheaper.

However, the last couple of cars I've had for sale I've sold at a loss:

1) Locally to a colleague of mine at work:

http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/gallery/index.php?spgmGal=Mercedes_SL280

2) I have a classic MB dealer "umming and ahhing" about this W201 190E with only 69K miles on the clock and a large sum that I have =just spent on it at £2950. I'm prepared to sell it to him for that...even though I know he sells them at £5K + ...but it's a loss when I add up what I've spent on it. If he mucks around either someone else will buy it if I advertise it (which I haven't) or I'll just keep it! It's that nice to drive:

Please don't feed his obsession too much Derin!!!. ;):D

Welcome to the forum, I'm another fan of your work  , and if I had the cash (alas...) I'd snap your hand off for that 190 even though I'm an out & out BMW fan!

Incidentally, Jan from (Nigel) Moseleys is my friend in case you wondered..... :)

I sincerely hope you don't mind me "spreading the word" as such by linking to your site?

Your work is simply stunning Sir.

Ramirez, I'll mostly echo what the other guys said regarding the 740 you linked, I think you can find a nicer one than that with a £3k budget to be honest. With £5k you'ed get a really good one, but really I think that's a bit too much to pay for an E38 unless you really have a thing for them and want an E38 and nothing else. You certainly can purchase luxury cars for precious little money now, but as the others said, just be aware, they can be quite costly to run, if it's just routine stuff for a few years count yourself lucky, but you can be landed with some really quite nasty bills if you are unlucky. I would say the E38 740 is a better bet than an S class Merc to try on a low budget, an S-Class is more expensive in just about every way, even the older W140 (my personal favourite) will generally cost more to keep going than an E38.

It's worth looking at the older Jaguar XJ6/8 (X308) too, you can do very well for a £5k budget with those, and despite what people say about old Jags, the X308's are usually ok, they are from the period where Ford really improved the reliability a lot over the older models. Of course, as always, do your research first and know what you are getting yourself into and potentially letting yourself in for.

Wow, just wow is all I can say, Derin you have had and have some stunning cars there, your attention to detail and apparent passion for your hobby is really quite amazing and gratifying to see. I hope you and people like you keep these beautiful older cars running for a very long time :)

I’ve wanted an R129 SL for a long time now, I looked at a few back in the summer of last year, didn’t really find anything I would actually buy for a price I was happy with though. Just spent the last few hours (holy crap it's 04:30) having a nosey around the ‘interwebs’ and I’ve found a few more promising examples of the SL320 (really good 500s seem to be like hens teeth) that might be worth a look, prices are down a tad too since it’s mid winter. Hohum, fiddle dee dee ...I really shouldn't :p ...but I do want one.

Hi Paul

Many thanks indeed!
Give my regards to Jan when you speak to him!:D

Now seems a good time to get an R129. Prices have probably bottomed out. I'd definitely have another. Great cars without all the rust issues of earlier SLs. I sold the one I had to a colleague at work (actually lost significant money on that car). It was only an SL280 which whilst not exactly 'slow' did feel like the engine was having to work maybe a little too hard for that weight of car. Next time I think I'd also be looking at SL320s. There are some really good SL500s around but they're 'big money' which I would be prepared to spend on one.

OK GUYS. Challenge for you.

For £3500, please can you find me an e38 740 or a Jag XJ8...Don't mind where in the country!

Oh and that Chester 740 is now down to £2290 - Not been to see it yet, but would it be reasonable value at £2000?

Ooh just seen one on Le Bay - Apparently it was the James Bond premier car.!
