Focus just lost all gears.. whats wrong?

yeah to clear up when I said resistance I meant I couldn't feel it biting but I guess that would be the case if there was nothing being driven? I couldn't just slip it in and out of gears without the clutch.

It must have been knocking before it went pop. Mine has started doing it, on and off the gas it knocks/clunks.

Only when you let off the power? I'd check your wheelnuts then. I had some lovely scrote undo mine and when I was on the power, nothing, off the power, knocking noise. When I've had failing CV joints etc. it's been knocking on and off power.

In your case, the good axle is harder to turn than the broken axle, so the diff just spins the broken one, and none of your wheels go round.

Knocking noises can be pretty hard to diagnose

I've had a garage tell me i needed to change my driveshaft due to knocking when corner and on/off power, turned out to be the exhaust hitting against the sump.

try accelerating with full lock, if its present the knocking noise is most likely the outer cv joints,

This happened on my focus mk1, it turned out to be the little rubbery plastic joint that connects the gear stick to the metal levers, underneath the gaitor.

oops sorry, yeah it was the o/s driveshaft that was knackered.

I was quoted £350+vat for the part and then an hours labour and some gearbox oil so all in just under £500.

Onto ebay, part for £100 all done for a whisker over £200.. pretty chuffed with that :)

Got it back on friday, feels bang on.

So good to be back in a car with some poke after a week in the wifes filthy kiddy wagon 1.8 mondeo.. how that thing ever gets anywhere I've no idea... and hairbands on the gearstick, cubby holes full of tissues, no ipod link, no bluetooth etc etc.. it was like visiting the 3rd world lol.. got mine back gave it a good clean and I was loving it today :)

If you're out of warranty I'd get yourself on ebay.. the difference in prices is just mental and there seems to be a good supply of STs to the breakers, often stolen/recovered I guess because the front end bits are all intact.

Verdict their is a TSB (sp?) for this. Going back in Thursday where they glue the splines into the hub and change the hub bolts or something.

I have to say it's such a refreshing change compared to BMW dealers I used!

The drivers heated seat is intermittent, wiggling about and it usually comes on. Not a biggy but mentioned it. They said it needs a new heating pad despite when they tested it, it worked.

Top class service, BMW need to take a leaf out of this dealerships book :)

What is it with women and cars? Sound just like my wife's car; a rolling health hazard.

Was it you who blew the turbo on your ST? Not having much luck with it are you - or do you drive like MrLOL? ;)
