UK out of recession?

'Long after' seems a little harsh, as it's measured quarterly and we are one quarter late - if we didn't come out of recession at the same time it couldn't have been any earlier :p

2 quarters in the case of France and Germany, which exited in August.

Actually that's a question i'd like answered too.

GDP figures are modified to remove seasonal variations.

And I don't see how it is Labour propaganda either- the National Office of Statistics is an independent body, similar to how the Monetary Policy Committee is also independent.

I seem to remember the recession in the 90's lasting a lot longer and it was a lot harsher. We've been in recession for what, a year this time and they're saying it's the longest on record. How can that be so? Genuine question, no hidden agenda, can someone explain?

(Unless Malc has been fiddling with time on the books of course ;))

The recession we have just left lasted for 6 consecutive quarters, starting in Q2 2008, until Q3 2009.
The 1990's recession lasted 5 consecutive quarters, from Q3 1990, to Q3 1991. The difference for the 1990's recession was that inflation rates and levels of unemployment were a fair bit higher from what I remember reading.

Yes they were. And there were house repossessions left right and centre and people disappearing abroad. I think we've had it pretty easy this time round, personally.

So it was just the aftermath last time then, not actual recession duration.

what exactly was the excitement in the posting order?? Its all normal to me and timestamped ok aswell...

and roll on 2030 and the greatest longest tory caused recesion yet !

indeed to be honest the 90s and 80s recessions seemed like a nightmare compared to this one. On the back of the longest ever economic boom as well! :) it's all good!

We've got mortgage interest at 0.75%, low inflation and low unemployment, compared to 15% interest, 18% inflation and millions unemployed. Basically -- no problem mate.

I think we're getting 'handling recessions' pretty well sorted! Now back to another boooooom!! Booyaka!

Wait until the Public Sector hits really take hold. And considering how many people are employed in the Sector in the UK i wouldn't go out celebrating just yet.

I work for the NHS in Wales and there is a lot of cutting back going on in terms of the worker bee's.

Wait for the increase in productivity due to less fiscal drag?

The expansion of the public sector has largely been funded on debt with little to show for it.

I think that technically there was more than one recession in the early '90s. There was the one caused by the US (surprise  ) Savings and Loans scandal which kicked off a global recession, followed by low and negative growth in the UK when the Conservative government of the time cut public spending to the bone, kept the value of the pound artificially high for the ERM via high interest rates (screwing home-owners, businesses and exporters hard), and gave no support whatsoever to British industries that would actually be quite useful now had they not gone out of business.
