Remember to always do the right thing and say Sorry....

Yes, I'm a youth worker that works with 'high risk' children and have visited the high security youth offenders 'prison' a few times to teach them music production.
If you knew the life's most of these young offenders then you would understand why they are so messed up and commit such horrific crimes!
Your a product of your environment and the environment of most of these kids is truly horrific, not everything is black and white!!

That's the thing though isn't it - you can make excuses for nearly any behaviour. We need to cut away all the reasons, the mitigating circumstances, the behavioural defects, the chemical imbalances and REALLY start punishing these criminals based on their crime.

Big kids these days...its something in the water i tell you!!!111!!!....i swear the water must have growth stuff in it but sadly it never worked for me...im only 5'10 medium build...quite a bit shorter than my 2 younger bros who are 6ft+....sucks to be the eldest but the shortest...should have listened to my parents when they told me to stop masturbating:p:D

LOL!!

Spawns Mum & Dad "Spawn! stop rubbing one out! you'll regret it in later life."

14 Year old Spawn "LOL! sif n00b parents!"

Present day Spawn. "Aww dammit if only I'd listened to my parents! My two younger brothers wouldn't still be stealing my lunch moneh"

Reminds me of a similar case that I dealt with as CID were snowed under.

Can't reveal too much other than me and my colleague reduced the lad to tears during interview, such was his ( legal and fully PACE compliant ) grilling.

9 month sentence and 10 years on the SOR whic h disappointed me to say the least.

What are you guys doing to try and prevent these horrific crimes from happening other than scream for blood on the internet that is??

Raising my two children to learn the value of life and how to treat other people respectfully and that any sort of violence against another person or animal or property is wrong. Raising them in a family environment that isn't influenced by drugs, drink, graphic violence/pornography.

In general I'm tryinng to raise them the way I was raised.

Ok then, we should start to hand out prison sentences to parents who raise these unruly children then. Maybe we should lock the entire family up?

The sick little **** deserves a harsher punishment.

Can't you chop his bits off for something like that? It's not like he's gonna be a great Dad later in life.

I'm just sick of kids. Sick of them.

Personally, I feel quite sorry for the woman involved in this. All the focus appears to be on the young man in question and what to do with him and whats the right and wrong way forward for him...and virtually nothing is being thought about the poor woman who was the actual victim and whats the right and wrong way forward for her.

Exactly, do you think that the majority of these young offenders come from stable loving backgrounds?
Of course not, it's a vicious circle and a high percentage of these offenders should have been pulled out of their family's a long time before they commit these horrific crimes!
If you want someone to blame then how's about social services doing a **** poor job and the horrible parents who create the 'monster' in the first place!

To be fair though, we are working on the assumption that is the case here. I've seen no mention of this particular kids upbringing (good or bad) or whether his parents were horrible or not.

Assumption works both ways.

This is what my gf tells me. She obviously can't go in to too much details, but some of the cases are so shocking. It's rather depressing, and I have respect for her (and you) for choosing such a demanding career.

Then surely the laws need changing to take this into account and some level of responsiblity handed out to the parents in such cases.

You say you are a youth worker, so I'm sure you are fully aware of the plight of Social Services and the woeful under staffing and under funding they face as well as the masses of red tape they must go through to remove a child from a family home?

You seem a little skewed in your views my friend.

Or, blame the offender and punish him according to his crime.

The issue of WHY he ended up like that is complete separate to the fact that he DID end up like that. His punishment shouldn't take into account his upbringing, otherwise nearly every criminal has an excuse.

I can't imagine phoning my girlfriend to be met with the sounds of a 13 year old bragging about raping her. I'm not a violent man, but I'm not sure I could live with that.

Its not just the act its the way it was done, you cant change someone like that and to be honest they dont deserve to be changed either. When i was 13 i was thinking of when i was next going to play on the sega or the next footie game, i wasnt blooming thinking im going to rape a woman. This stuff just makes me cringe inside what a horrible thing to happen to the woman the boyfriend.

This. I know someone who I went to school with who is in prison for rape and whilst I can't say for certain that he was abused it seemed VERY unlikely he was abused as his family were nice and had a very stable life.

This person was an absolute **** at school, bullying people etc and his parents really tried to help him stop it, but it clearly didn't work. It's very unlikely he was abused and yet he's in prison for rape now. Where's your justification for that, Vesta?

The ONLY way your going to reduce crimes like this is if your understand WHY they have been committed.
Harsher punishments are about as useful as a chocolate teacup with regards to reducing such crimes, decades of research and stats pretty much conclusively show that harsher punishments do not act as a deterant.
Also obviously Prevention > cure.

I have the a great deal of respect for social services and the work they do, however I feel they are failing far too often. I don't know why this is but feel the amount of children that slip through the net is unacceptable.

Surely you know it's down to being under staffed, under funded and being covered in red tape?
