Hey guys, need to build a pc for a friend

Could you spec me a pc for general use such as word processing, playing music and general web browsing?

Like it to be as cheap as possible eg £300 or less :), no need for monitor keyboard etc just the full working base unit.

He would prefer Intel but and AMD/Intel comparison might be interesting to compare price etc

Cheers in advanced

sounds good thanks RJC

think there is money to be saved in the CPU/MOBO area or will it be going into risky territory regards to lag etc?

I think that the first build is quite a good specification for the price! Even the Corsair PSU is made by Seasonic and uses good components such as Japanese made capacitors.

The Asus M4A785TD-M Evo is an excellent motherboard:

Cheaper spec to compare :)

If the OP wants to reduce the price they could go with a DDR2 based build as the Athlon II will work with both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM.

I would look at this motherboard:

This motherboard has a better integrated graphics card though:

I would look at this RAM:
