thanks for the post Big Wayne, however im quite confused on the results, is the i5 750 just the same as i7 920 for cinebench marks? i know the i7 920 has hyper threading but is there much of a difference between these two chips at all?

i'm just asking as im am saving up for a core i7 build mainly being used for CGI work using Cinema 4 mainly then gaming second.

Have you considered the Core i7 860??

In Cinebench it seems to be faster than a Core i7 920:

The P55 motherboards also are cheaper then the X58 motherboards and the socket 1156 platform seems to be more energy efficient too.

According to those Anandtech benchmarks the i5 750 beats out the i7 920 in pretty much everything.

Very surprised to see that. Might reconsider and go with an i5 750 on my new build. The only concern is not having the triple channel RAM.

i have never really ever considered the i7 860, and looking at the benchmarks on the link, it does actually do more better than the i7 920. One question though, how future proof is the 1156 platform, i am looking to have a comp to last me for at least 4 years, with very minimal upgrades

I would think that socket 1366 would last longer and possibly socket AM3. Socket 1156 is supposedly being replaced by socket 1155 next year AFAIK.

Also AMD are releasing the Phenom II X6 in the next few months so it maybe worth a wait and see how it will perform. There could be some architectural improvements.

Here are some more details:

I think that if AMD made an Athlon II X6 running at 3GHZ it would be an interesting CPU!!

Hey sammo62

Can I ask why? . . . what task do you need the extra bandwidth for?

Well although the main purpose of the system will be gaming, I was planning on video editing / using photoshop on it too.

I also feel the 1366 is a bit more futureproof for me in terms of SLI/Crossfire and generally coming with 6GB RAM as opposed to 4GB. (Can I use more than 4GB on 1156?)

Obviously saving money on the 1156 is its big appeal.
