Virgin media 50 meg broad band

Meh

Even on VM 20MB when you do get capped it's for a total of 5 hours only and only if you exceed 7.3GB during the daytime or 3.5GB during the evening up to late night at which point you get capped to 5MB which is hardly bad with 500KB/sec download speeds.

No caps at the moment, but the last word I heard from Virgin was that there will be throttling introduced once the XXL packaged has finished being rolled out across the country.

Never mind caps, you'll barely be able to load these forums let alone download enough to get you capped. Virgin 50meg is the worst service i've ever received for anything, how they can sell their service around here is beyond me, it really should be illegal.

Only times you can use the internet is between 1-6am and even then you wont get good pings.

During the day websites don't even load and if you say you like hd youtube....HA! we cant even watch normal youtube at any time of day. iplayer...thats out. online gaming...not a chance. horrendous packet loss all day means the internet is a lottery. you sit there pressing f5 and hope you manage to catch a wave of internet where packets don't get lost so the website loads. Its utterly ridiculous.

They have agreed to let us cancel contract early and crediting us over £200 for how carp their service is but frankly i would rather have had the internet for the last 4 months...

Be is arriving on thursday!!!! i literally cannot wait to get rid of virgin 50meg. i will have the internet again! ill stop having to watch pr0n on 3G cos its faster (no joke, i do all internet on 3G now as its 100x faster than 50meg virgin)

I'm currently receiving some pretty solid connection, only got above 1meg as its middle of the night...

Cool story, Bro!

Wow, sounds like you have a dodgy connection as I've never experienced those issues down here in Bournemouth on previous 20MB or current 50MB.

You can't generalise your problems for everyone elses. I've had 50MB a few weeks since it was launched in my area (I've had it since the end of July) and I've only ever had one outage (which was an outage for the whole town on all services).

I can max out my connection at any time of the day for as long as I want. The only problem I've had with YouTube is it failing to load, but that was because of Kaspersky's 'Web Anti-Virus'.

I also have 20MB in my other house on the other side of town and have never had a problem with it either.

Yes i know my problems are not experienced by the majority of users. its a complete postcode lottery so OP i would check around forums to see if your area has problems, as if they do they will NEVER be fixed. we have had the "theres a problem in your area" since we first got it, and have been given OVER 10 different fix dates. its an absolute joke, i know for a fact no-one is working on the problem and never will be. so just avoid virgin forever.

I only complain so much as virgin have fudged me off so bad i feel it is my duty as an irate customer to slander them (even though its not slander cos its technically true) at any possible opportunity and try and prevent as many people as i can from signing up :)

To be fair, he's certainly not alone in receiving awful service from Virgin. We signed up with them 2 years back, and spent most of the next 12 months trying to get out of the contract. Just found the results of the speed test I did on their instructions to work out what sort of speed we were getting:

DOWNSTREAM
28.02.08 01.20am: 311 kbps
02.03.08 10.05pm: 53 kbps
04.03.08 07.10pm: 93 kbps
05.03.08 06.07pm: 37 kbps

On an 8mbit line? Handy. Using O2 in my current flat (5 minutes walk from the last one), absolutely flawless, maxes out the 20mbit almost any time of day, cheaper and more reliable. I just don't get how Virgin managed to be so hopeless.

Virgin were crap for me too. I phoned the helpline on countless occasions and had my time wasted by idiots telling me that my ethernet cable from modem to PC was the wrong way round.......

Gave up and went with BE, much much better.

Virgin is awesome when it works. It was brilliant for me for most of last year, then come november my UBR became totally oversubscribed, and it's been a lag-fest of non-loading pages and ridiculous pings from about 3PM to 1AM every day except sat where it's all day!

Don't go with virgin. I used to recommend them but they're oversubscribed all over the country atm and it's a massive problem. I only just got them to acknowledge my issue (and everyone else in this area), so it could take half a year for them to upgrade. Such a joke.

Students I expect.

Not entirely, as before they came back in september it wasn't up to scratch either, though you're mostly right, when the students (me included, though I was here well before term started) come back it's totally hammered.

VM know about the loads, so this should have really been anticipated - they know how many people were signing up. It's very irritating, and I'm going to try and get some compensation and leave VM as soon as possible for ADSL and maybe a decent ping without any packet loss with any luck, unless they can sort it out soon. I can't see that happening though.

No caps at the moment, but the last word I heard from Virgin was that there will be throttling introduced once the XXL packaged has finished being rolled out across the country.

Except the rollout apparently completed in Sept 09 and that's what prompted the price drop.

No problems here, I'm loving it. :D

I do sympathise with those experiencing genuine issues, it'd drive me insane! But it does annoy me when 80% to 90% of the 'complaints' you read about VM online are either about the ADSL (but lumping in the cable) or else slating 50 megs (DOCSIS 3) because "my 2 meg connection is rubbish". :o

Credit where it's due my connection is awesome, and the staff have been brilliant. Perhaps I'm just lucky. :)

I upgraded to 50meg recently and before ordering I asked point blank whether the XXL package would ever be throttled and was to unconditionally "No it will never be throttled". If I connect my pc directly to the cable modem I get a steady 48meg connection and I get between 16ms and 40ms pings to most UK game servers but the wireless router they give you sucks and I get about 25mb to 35mb with a cat5e wired connection to it. As soon as OcUK start selling the Netgear WNR3500L 802.11n I am buying it.

BTW I pay 65.95 for my whole package including V+ box and I think new customers can get even better deals:

Advance charges £65.95

Line Rental £11.00
Talk International £1.50
Talk Mobile £1.50
Talk Unlimited £7.95
Loyalty Bb/Phone/TV Discount £-22.25
Additional Loyalty Discount £-1.75
Fully Itemised Billing 09 January - 08 February £0.00
TV Size: XL £23.00
XXL 50Mb Broadband £45.00

I just upgraded to 50MB and pay about the same price as this. The connection is a little patchy and I find myself having to reboot the modem when it starts to go really slow.
