This is something I use a fair bit, but I must admit that I use it mostly out of good faith.

Is there anything better? Anything more powerful for fixing buggered hard drives? I know at the end of the day its best to get the data back and then move to a brand new one, but if thats not always possible I've used chkdsk to fix bad sectors before.

HDD manufacturers offer diagnostics software for checking the condition of their drives usually, don't know how they compare to Chkdsk I'm afraid, but can't do any harm using them as well as Chkdsk.
