As title! Putting together a cheapish gaming system, wittled it down to these cards for the money:

Geforce GTX 260

ATI Radeon HD 5770

ATI Radeon HD 4870

Which is the best and why ? Also any other decent buys in that price range iv missed?

ATI Radeon HD 5770

it's brand new and plays all my game's without missing a beat.

cod 4

modern war fare 2

killing floor

l4d

ect...

What motherboard do you have? Do you want DX11? Will it be upgraded in the future? What games is it intended to be played with?

A lot of people on here will recommend the 5770, but it's not always suitable, and only really comes into it's own when run in crossfire, especially when talking DX11.

Depending on price, the GTX260 could be a good deal, being slightly better than the 4870, which probably isn't worth considering.

Is the 4890 too expensive?

There's also a 5830 coming soon that should be much better than the 5770, though probably a bit more to buy outright, like ca £170.

5770, AVP is here soon do not forget and it's DX11. :)

Have a decent 600w or so PSU then add a 2nd whenever needed.

U tell me guys Dx11 important? In real world terms? B playin everythin, sc biosbock crysis warhammer games. (edit: read above avp dx11, oooohhh yay! Lol)

Last time really played had a 8800gtx and played crysis fine :p

so 4890 nails them all huh? By how much? Going in my on order system:

3.4ghz quad core
8gb ram
p45 mainboard
corsair 550watt

and I'll jus b adding a western dig 320gb hd

have a mac for my non game stuff so this is jus a game/toy box sort of thing

I don't think a single 5770 will cut the mustard in any new DX11 games with a reasonable sized monitor. You'd probably find yourself sacrificing IQ (read running in DX9 or whatever) to get some frames back. I'd only consider it if going crossfire.

4890 is a bit faster, and the best non-DX11 card of the lot, and beats the 5770 for non DX11.

If DX11 is a must, then go for the 5770. It's currently sitting in between the 4870 and 90 for performance, but requires less power to run.

If you're not bothered by either DX11 or power consumption, go for a 4890. But is a previous generation tech.

5770. A bit more expensive than a 4870, but same performance, supports DX11 and uses less power than a 4870.

Seems like the card to get tbh.

if your going for a quad, give the i5 750 and p55 motherboard and 4 gb ram ddr3 a thought as im sure it wouldnt be much difference in price at all

even the 5770 is 17% dearer for similar if not less performance and hardly usable directX11 features.

True, but I think most people see it as a cool and quiet card which has massive potential if you pick up a second when prices drop. Too be fair though, picking up any card for DX11 at the moment is pretty pointless, the minor improvement in looks at the moment isn't really worth it. When faster cards come out which could handle DX11 effects throughout the entire game then it'd be worth it. Until then though, I doubt we'll see many games using tessellation all the way through.

However, if you can pick up a cheap 4890, and not too bothered about heat, noise and DX11 then that'd be the best bet.

if its jsut for gaming save on the cpu a dual core will be more than enough

and get a 5850:D

thats not entirely true, i used to max my dual core out in some games and i could feel it aswell, when i moved to a quad the difference was like night and day
